@junesim63 Excellent article. As a #Smallholder the issues here are both to do with imported soy and the restrictive regulations around feeding poultry and pigs food waste. On a plot our size (2 acres) we can grow broad beans in sufficient quantities to feed our chickens and we can buy local barley - all our straw is also locally grown. However if we were bigger than a few dozen birds we would need licensed to make our own bird feed. We are forbidden to feed them kitchen waste. 1/2

A 2017 study in #ScienceofTotalEnvironment produced telling, but largely unsurprising results about knowledge, perceptions, & beliefs of #chemical #crop protection among #smallholder #farmers in #SEAsia. Some key findings among surveyed farmers,
1. crop protection by women = 42% less pesticides use
2. had almost no knwldg. of beneficial insects
3. >50% had adeq. knwldg. of pesticides hlth. #risks

Here in East Staffordshire UK we had to junk about 75% of our Leek crop this Autumn due to damage by Pea Moth larvae...

This is despite netting them immediately after planting.

How do smallholders who may be growing much larger numbers of plants deal with the problem… ? Or do you just accept losses..? 😞

I’m a full time #carer so I’m generally having to fight for things that should be universal rights, which takes up a surprising amount of time - and all other interests are squeezed around or related to that!
Work is all things #LivedExperience perspectives and especially getting these to shape research.
Life in the gaps is mostly being a totally novice #smallholder, a guardian of many animals and a pretty decent cocktail maker.
