Are you trying to follow hashtags from a smaller or single user instance, but not seeing any new posts with those tags?

Or are you on a themed instance, and feel you are missing out on tagged posts about your other interests?

Still trying to crack #discovery on #Mastodon. The latest lesson - since I'm on a #SmallInstance (the benefits of which seem to way outweigh the drawbacks), if I search for something like #factorio, I'm only going to get posts I've seen, or written myself.

The key to breaking out of this seems to be to go to one of the "big boy" instances and use the search bar from THERE. Many more results appear when I do that, from what I can see.

How it feels when content discovery is way too one sided 🙃

Maybe I’m wrong though. Maybe my concerns are unfounded. What do you all think? What are some of the benefits to having your MAIN ACCOUNT on a smaller instance? 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔

If you are on a #mastodon #SmallInstance or #SingleUserInstance and have found that hashtag following is not working well because your instance does not see many posts, here is a new #python script you can try:

It needs user access tokens with read:follows & read:search rights, and is best run alongside the mastodon server.

Give it a list of bigger servers, and you should then see most public posts with the tags you follow shown in your home feed

I pitched a feature request on #github for #mastodon regarding better content discovery for small instances or single user instances using content sampling.

The goal now is to challenge this idea, in order to get it more robust, improve it together, or to throw it away.

Following #hashtags in a #smallInstance isn't as awesome as in a big one, and that's because the instance doesn't know about most of what's going on out there.

I wish I could follow tags in a different server, that would be a great way to bring relevant content to smaller instances :)

Would it be not nice to have a bot on a bigger instance following the tag and another bot on mine that boosts it?

Would appreciate folks takes, especially #mastoAdmins as I try to understand if I'm missing good reasons not to do it.
