I just read Small Things Like These by Claire Keegan. It’s a long, long time since I’ve read such a good book. It has a simple grace and beauty about it that’s bewitching, haunting. It’s about a difficult subject but it’s powerfully uplifting. And it’s so easy to read and such a page-turner. This book will be read and remembered for a long time.

First read of the year. What an atmosphere she creates. Hardly slept running it over last night. Small and enormous at the same time.

“The weather had turned dry and colder, and people remarked on what a picture the convent made, how like a Christmas card it almost was with the yews and evergreens dusted in frost and how the birds, for some reason, had not touched a single berry on the holly bushes there.” No better time to read (or reread) this small masterpiece.
