Very relevant though it was recorded 7 years ago, I'm not sure many non-techie types will properly understand what 'cloud' actually is, or 'internet of things' come to that.

Recently, I saw a report about and , that only about 10% of users actually connect their devices to their network and use the added features, so I want to ask about their experience.

If you are such a user who didn't connect their to their network, why?

Are they features just not worth it? Thus, it is too much effort to actually connect and set up such devices, or are the features just not worth it?

Are you worried about ? Did you actually read the privacy policies, or did you assume you don't want them to have that access and data?

Ignoring setup and installation, what smart-home features would you like? Is it a sensor or control based? Do you want to control lights, appliances, and turning devices on and off, or do you want to measure metrics such as temperature in your house?

Finally, is it possible that automation is just too much effort. For example, having a water sensor in your basement and getting a notification about a leak?

I don't use the so-called 'smart' function of my TV. I replace the TV only when it breaks. If I want to stream I hook the device to my HDMI box.

Facebook's Bosworth said that “the entire smart home category has underwhelmed expectations for a while now.”

He added, “I think if you go back to where we expected smart home to be as an industry when Portal entered the market versus where it is today, it's just not been nearly successful as we expected.”

We bought a new home and got insurance set up and today I got an email telling me how to set up a home safety smart device, so I called the insurance person to ask how to remove it.

She was curious why since it gives us a discount and I was like, “I’m a software engineer and I don’t trust any smart devices. I know it makes me sound really paranoid but also I am.”

She was really nice about it but maybe I’m being too paranoid?

Tech enthusiasts: My shoes are bluetooth and wifi enabled so my steps get synced to the cloud while they also stream music to me. I can control the music from any of my other devices.

Tech workers: If my shoes make a peep on their own, I'm incinerating them.

I recently bought a new f******g smart TV vizio - vizio in Italian means vice - now this f******g TV comes with its own android like environment and apparently won't work if you don't setup an account with them...

Holy shit how can't you get mad with this f*******g Corp?

Everytime the same and the same pattern. Didn't work anything and it prevented to use the FireTV which is from another f******g corp, but at least work.

To retake posses of this f*****g TV I had to do a factory reset without connecting it to internet. In this case it works as a standard TV and allows the FireTV to operate the TV (volume and power).

Have been fun using the FireTV meanwhile Amtson allowed to install custom launchers without rooting the device... And as any other f*******g Corp it disabled this feature. The official launcher is the big shit ever and I hate it.

I don't want use any instead I want that work for me not against me! For its shitty UI who knows how many licenses vizio infringed? And who care if this devices use , and the like of then are using against you? It is a huge amount of shit here!

Next time I'll buy a huge monitor I already a minipc to use as media center and I fuck up all the f*****g corps that really pissed me off.

Last but not least a kind word for those f*******g the only reason they exist is for controlling the way you access such content, the least control you have the more the technology will be design against you! The W3C embraced the DRM and modern web technology now are constantly built up against us...

Hi FSMI,

Thanks for this great resource.

Recently we noticed that don't allow users to encrypt their own device. It says something like and the user cannot change the setting.

This is really bad.

Out-of-the-box encryption means no , in our opinion.

We wonder whether it's worth owning a today. Maybe an () campaign is needed. Similar to ACAB, but aimed at the extreme threat posed by .

Yes, in our very limited experience it takes a while to learn and confidently and successfully root those things. We are at the stage where we think its not work owning a so-called .

Just bring a rape alarm and flare on the road with you.

Honestly, not even joking.
