Thanks to @officialSMBE for making space for climate activism and to @SanjaHakala, @gaston and @AudreyBras for facilitating an engaging workshop yesterday.

It was great to be able to chat openly about #ClimateBreakdown and #DirectAction together with a room full of evolutionary biologists, geneticists and ecologists yesterday.

F Delsuc: ancestral mammal had many chitinases, consistent with fossil evidence for insectivorous diet, followed by many losses in most mammalian lineages. Frédéric Delsuc: 5 convergent evolutions of ant (or termite) eating among mammals, including one hyena. Focus of his study is on anteaters and pangolins (a bit disappointed not to hear about aardwolf, the termite eating hyena). #SMBE2023

E Lau shows very nicely how bioluminescence in ostracods, fireflies and sea pansies can use very different structures yet convergently recruited homologous enzymes.
