So in spite of .5mm pith IC's, and 0402 passives, #electronics can still be done at home ... if you have enough magnifying glasses, a steady hand for the tweezers and buy a bit of extra #soldering equipment, like hotplate and hot air blower.

I decided to redo the DIY #shield. Now I'll be able to connect four I²C sensors using #JST connectors. The Bluetooth module will be repositioned, too. The resistors were replaced by #SMD ones, to save space.
I only have to decide which pins to use.

The USB Host Shield I bought on eBay from a Chinese vendor turned out to be nonfunctional, because they used a 74HC125 instead of a 74AHC125. I got a full refund, and replaced the IC with the proper one. So, I essentially only paid the price for the chip (1,20€). It works fine now!

Found a small fan in two parts that breaks into two ~40mm 6v fans. Thinking about using it/them for cooling my #raspberrypi. It seems that it also has a third pin for speed control, which I need a motor controller for.
Might design a PCB motor driver HAT for it as a good starter project with #KiCad / #SMD assembly, All I really need is a few motor controller IC's...I think. We'll have to see how this project goes.
In the meantime I might just order one of the 30mm raspi fans off of ebay for $5 while I design it, as the pi does seem to run a bit hot with a DE.

A large percentage of the devices shipped to the global south have very small components, called #SMD (surface-mounted device) components. The #DEDBUG toolkit by Unbinare revives and facilitates free-form, point-to-point construction techniques for small, surface-mount components salvaged from electronic waste, allowing for the construction of circuits without the requirement to design a #PCB beforehand. Each participant will receive a DEDBUG toolkit and basic electronics tools to experiment with at home. The kit will also be donated to workers in the informal sector surrounding waste management sites throughout the Global South.

I know a lot of hobbyist electronics people hate SMD/SMT but honestly, it's easier than THT IMO. I was skeptical of that, but it uses less heat, is easier to rework, takes less space and is more energy efficient. What's not to love?
So I have my first ever “proper” soldering station, and it has a hot air reflow gun for #SMD components.
Is it worth my time to practice doing reflow on something like this from Aliexpress (see image and it’s description) it’s as cheap as chips?
Or should I be safe doing my first reflow on a real board if I follow the tips and tricks on the intertubes?

I took a class taught by @phooky at NYC Resistor on Saturday. Its true, I have always avoided SMT, but I have also wanted to make more PCBs of designs and they are in most electronics to take apart these days. The solder paste toaster oven is #fast , #delightful and the components are just terrifically #tiny !
I hear Kicad is nice. Its been years since I touched Eagle. I really wanna make some ready to go blinky, synthy badges and "controllers"

Going to try out the #GD32E230 microcontroller by #GigaDevices. It's supposed to be at least somewhat compatible with the #STM32F030 by #STMicroelectronics but is available in several additional, physically small package types (QFN32 5x5mm, QFN28 4x4mm, LGA20 3x3mm).
I intend to use the LGA20 3x3mm but for trying out I soldered a TSSOP20 onto a generic breakout board.
