Morning update from Smith River Complex North: Grants Pass, Ore. – Overnight, thunderstorms brought abundant lightning, gusty winds, scattered showers, and the possibility of new fires to southwest Oregon and northern California. Fire managers prepared for these storms and have plans to address new fires in cooperation with fire services and other emergency agencies.

Once traffic has been escorted through in both directions, U.S. 199 will again be closed until the 5 p.m. opening. 5 p.m. - Travel from the south closure in Gasquet on U.S. 199 to the Oregon border. Once all of the northbound traffic has been escorted through the closure to the Oregon border, southbound traffic will be escorted from the Oregon Border back to the south closure in Gasquet. for a tentative reopening to limited traffic control Monday, Aug. 28. Our partners at CHP Crescent City released the following schedule for the limited reopening: 7 a.m.

- Travel from the south closure in Gasquet on U.S. 199 to the Oregon border. Once all of the northbound traffic has been escorted through the closure to the Oregon border, southbound traffic will be escorted from the Oregon Border back to the south closure in Gasquet.

● Per Caltrans District 1 - U.S. 199 ROAD CLOSURE: As of 11:47 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 24, U.S. 199 remains fully closed in Del Norte County from Hiouchi to the Oregon border (PM 6 to 36.4) due to the Smith River Complex Fire. Caltrans Maintenance crews and contractors are actively working to remove hazardous trees and clear debris from the roadway…
