I love that #SMT3 Metatron's theme was an ominous rearrangment of the #SMT1 Law/Messian theme!
I am currently level 14 @ ~4hrs and made it to, and now leaving, Ginza. Part of what made me pick up the notebook was a NPC giving me directions of where to go next and me remembering how sometimes in #SMT1 NPCs would straight up disappear after talking to you. 😬 Yeah I can look it up but I'd rather do it on my own if I can. #SMT3
Hard to believe there isn't a demon encyclopedia in #SMT3 when there was one in the GBA version of #SMT1 - not that you could consult it during battle. So I'm back to my old school gaming notebook. Here are a couple pages (with small spoilers whited out) as an example. I have some notes in here from past games that I can no longer make any sense of... but sometimes figuring stuff out on graph paper is still easiest.
Played a bit more #SMT3 and made it to all-important Shibuya. I've never been to Tokyo but I feel like I know the city and surrounding areas because of playing #SMT1 At one point I was completely lost in the over world and ended up looking up the Tokyo Metropolitan Government building on Google Maps to figure out what direction I was supposed to be going in.
I forgot about this image I made mostly of clipart when I was doing my Shin Megami Tensei 1 streams.

Listening to the 4 CD Shin Megami Tensei V soundtrack and it's still just so good. This edition includes orchestral versions of #SMT1 tracks as well. #SMT5 was my first SMT but I had played Persona 4 and P3P and hated the music for those so my expectations were low. I was absolutely blown away. I haven't loved a game OST this much since Etrian Odyssey. Here is my fave track from the last dungeon. https://youtu.be/KZRPirXfXHU
I finally finished #SMT1. Not that difficult to get to through the final bosses, but I'm sure if I hadn't built my characters properly it would have been much harder. Without soft saves I wouldn't have made it. Probably about 55hrs total, but there was ~10 hours of grinding in there. A flawed game, sometimes very irritating, but also fascinating and beautiful in some ways. Here's the amazing ending theme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UmPZAUl4JeE&list=PLB-py7ylAoF9SbPuLXo5G54n8QO79l2tI&index=26
The final #SMT1 dungeon is looooong and making me miss the #EtrianOdyssey warp-back-to-stairs skill. I mean it's not like I'm dying or anything, and I can soft save thanks to the magic of emulation, but sometimes it is just... a lot of walking, a lot of backtracking, a lot of dead ends and empty rooms and one-way doors warp floor tiles.
Playing #SMT1 after having played #SMTV I can recognize all the thematic similarities between the two even if the gameplay and graphics are completely different. I haven't played any other SMTs so I don't know how much they stick to the same set up of protag hero + law hero + chaos hero + female protag hero, being forced to pick sides, God & angels vs the more pantheistic gods & demons. I can also recognize Etrian Odyssey in the dungeon + overworld and combat mechanics. 45hrs & last dungeon.
Looking at a real map of Tokyo to figure out where the fuck I am in the #SMT1 overworld map.
Opportunity buy it for $80, but is that really low enough? I'm not really in the mood for #pokemon and would like to beat #SMT1 before starting something else. But I've also got fomo and it's unlikely to go much lower in price. Hmmmmmm. If I hadn't already spent so much this month I would probably be more likely to buy it. 😑
