Interesting article on a modern take on IP over Carrier Pigeon:
https://www.tomshardware.com/news/yes-a-pigeon-is-still-faster-than-gigabit-fiber-internet
Funny the article doesn’t mention the original joke RFC:
https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/html/rfc1149
With real world testing described:

Lately I have been thinking about my #airgapped systems. I currently use NNCP over USB drives to get data to/from them. Highly secure #sneakernet, but not the most practical sometimes. In thinking of alternatives that don't involve a whole network stack, I keep coming back to #serial lines.
Going beyond the old 115.2Kbps is now common; Gearmo has some that use a FTDI chipset rated at 920Kbps over RS-232, but in my experience can hit 2Mbps. 1/

@aprilfollies @pluralistic If you're actually interested in #sneakernet and #AsynchronousCommunication, you might find #NNCP interesting.
It's a renewed #UUCP essentially, with modern encryption & first-class support for portable storage as a transport (https://nncp.mirrors.quux.org/Comparison.html).

Has anyone in recent memory ran NNTP #Usenet over #hamradio? I think it would be good for a lot of things, including disaster response in a large area.
For the uninitiated, it's a text based news distribution network roughly analogous to #IRC. It's federated in such a way that even posting via #sneakernet works just fine.

Go home wifi, you're drunk.
My phone got over 600Mbps immediately before this.
Intel's Wifi 6 drivers on Linux, ladies and gentlemen.
@SocialistStan @lauren @Shachihoko @HistoPol @eff @team Even if they try to ban instances from doing that, #ActivityPub relays work and there's no reason instances can't be moved to #Tor, #I2P or other #AnonymizationNetworks & #mixnets
You could also add full #AsynchronousCommunication support to relays including #sneakernet
#tor #i2p #anonymizationnetworks #asynchronouscommunication #sneakernet #activitypub #activitypubrelay #mixnets #mixnet
@geospart @techandcoffee @Stark9837 @ProfCyberNaught Yeah, even with networks that are actually able to obfuscate against observers like #I2P, you're in a bad situation as it isn't improbable at this point that they'll try & ban #anonymization technologies entirely.
If you can, I recommend getting out however you can.
If not, investigating alternative offline/ #sneakernet routing options for technologies like #NNCP & #Usenet might be advisable.
#i2p #sneakernet #NNCP #usenet #anonymization
@rauschma Prioritizing #offline #UserAgent usage and #AsynchronousCommunication makes for more resilient programs.
It enables the #sneakernet notion traveling to areas with adequate service, sending & receiving batches, and then going on your merry way.
Not all areas have reliable #networking, and for all those that do it does nothing for an unreliable upstream.
#offline #useragent #asynchronouscommunication #sneakernet #networking
@erincandescent @viq @futurebird @skyfaller There's also #NNCP for that. Full #sneakernet operation is intentionally supported.
@meko Have you heard of #NNCP? That's pretty much the best example of such a program that comes to mind.
https://www.complete.org/nncp/
https://nncp.mirrors.quux.org/
It doesn't require any connectivity at all in order to work.
#Briar is a bit different but also provides an off-grid messenger. https://briarproject.org/how-it-works/
Even #email tolerates disruption fairly well (https://www.complete.org/asynchronous-communication/).

@ijatz_La_Hojita Techncially speaking, nothing in #ActivityPub proper /does/ explicitly require low-latency... except that in practice every single server uses off-the-shelf HTTP libraries that expect conventional low-latency TCP/UDP to work as expected.
If you modified the software to cache the session in DB and made for example some #NNCP adapter for carrying the HTTP requests by #sneakernet, you could have a janky but fully compliant ActivityPub server supporting #AsynchronousNetworking.
#activitypub #NNCP #sneakernet #asynchronousnetworking
@ijatz_La_Hojita @atomicpoet Not really without some changes, the current #ActivityPub spec interactions require low-latency query/responses between servers.
It's actually quite unfortunate because that also kills any easy way to do make a #sneakernet instance.
It's heartbreaking if i think about all of it too much, but I'm attempting to utilize the Fediverse to organize and network in case the resistance becomes more literal than figurative.
I'm encouraging community Resilience efforts, which include #GuerrillaGardening, focusing on #pollinators, alt forms of communication such as
(#SelfHost #fediverse instances, awareness of mass campaigns such aswheat paste posters, #HAMRadio, #morsecode). #Sneakernet #Wifi #adhoc
I think that we should focus on a more local and distributed food supply & coop network. Even if the fascists don't take over completely, it will help to mitigate suffering from climate change. Focusing on seed bombing, especially #Milkweed to help the #endangered #MonarchButterflies, and other pollinators. This includes nectar producing wildflowers. This is all part of a move towards #sustainability & #permaculture

My upload speed caps at 125KB/s and it has too much packet loss to sustain long term uploads over most protocols. This is the best internet available here.
But all the internet advice for doing backups assumes I can upload to the cloud. I literally generate data too fast for that right now. The sneakernet strikes again. #sneakerNet #countryLife
Ok, thanks! 😄
P.S., what does #sneakernet mean these days? Back in the 90s, it meant schlepping a floppy, later Zip, later USB drive 😅
I have been having a ton of fun being part of a #CommunityRadio station. We're currently planning my first-ever implementation of a #sneakernet for backing up our studio site and transmitter site to ensure continuity. Super cool, thrifty ways of accomplishing expensive ideas has been *extremely* enjoyable.
@matzekult @reticuleena Ob #Sneakernet die beste Lösung ist, hängt von der Datenmenge ab. Einen Online-Rechner oder Least cost router dafür würde ich begrüßen!

@LambdaCalculus I half expected a DLT tape to be hidden under the CW warning. lol. #sneakernet forever!
