I have been trying to get #snikket working on a #beasts #raspberrypi but it never gets past waiting for certificate. Anyone have any ideas to resolve this. DNS seems ok as I can connect to the initial http web page which just continues to refresh as https never become available.

@al1r4d I like both, but it seems that #Matrix has more polished clients that I can introduce my family to more easily and more active development (in my perception at least), making it more likely to keep growing in good ways. Personally I'd like to see both advance and watch #Dino and #Snikket #XMPP clients with interest.

@postroutine part of the community have gone with #Jabber anyways. Since Cisco has allowed use of the name (I believe)
#snikket is not quite what you describe, but has the advantage of having android and iOS clients with the same name. Which makes things much easier for normies

I think it depends on your family and your friends, if they are willing to give #XMPP a chance.

The easiest way would be to set up a #Snikket server and invite your family and your friends to according Snikket circles. Advantages: Easy onboarding and they do not start with an empty contact list. And if you select a fancy domain name, they additionally have a cool XMPP address.

Your #iOS friends can use the app #Snikket or #Monal (whatever they like better).

@Jdreben @hmans #Snikket (@snikket_im) has been my favorite recently if you want the whole package (clients for most platforms, run your own server, etc.) if you just want a phone app, Conversations (https://conversations.im/) is also great.

Had a great first day meeting everyone at #FOSDEM yesterday! Looking forward to day 2 🙂

From 10am to 12pm Sunday we'll be running an in-person #Snikket install session at the Real-time Lounge in K building level 2. Drop in any time, bring your laptop and walk away with your own private messaging server. It's a great way to get started with #XMPP!

OK, today is time to resurrect the family #Snikket server and attempt to stay away from big tech stuff while I do it. Can I avoid cloudformation templating and still get SSH CA to work out of the box?

I started this challenge of persuading my family to move from WhatsApp to my own #Snikket instance.

Didn't vote as I love both. @xmpp is stable and proven, with dev happening in a more decentralized, community based manner. @matrix seems to be developing faster, with advanced use cases (eg. #thirdroom ), greater adoption, more polished and well maintained clients (eg #Element, #FluffyChat, #Schildichat, #Cinny etc)

Watching #Dino and #Snikket on #XMPP for usability and #ElementX on #Matrix. All need to be friendlier/less technical for new users.

Both better than #WalledGardens!

@Monal I just had a quick look at the new audiocall UI in #Monal Alpha (see screenshot).

A great improvement for #XMPP on #iOS but currently limited to calls from Monal Alpha to Monal Alpha (since it uses the new version 0.4 of XEP-0353 to initiate audiocalls).

I use #prosody with #conversations for the family for years. It works very well.
At that time, I installed it on their devices on Christmas.
Now, nearly 10y later, I would've used invites, that where developed by the @snikket_im team in the meantime. I think #snikket can be a real gamechanger. Making it very easy for non tech people to join your #selfhosted server.

It seems like most people like to have a top-level domain address. When using #Snikket as a server-software, this is a bit more complicated (if you still want to host a webpage at the same top-level domain).

chat was the most voted subdomain. It describes what the address is used for without offering technical details.
Please be aware that Conversations shows a warning when you add a JID which contains chat as a subdomain.
