@colehaddon I don't know if you read the comments on that article but it got an absolute pasting for exactly the reasons you've outlined. I completely resent calling it - pejoratively, as some kind of character flaw -"hoarding". Frankly, the idea of tearing them up and putting them in the recycling is just lazy - there are plenty of places (refuges, hospitals) who would happily accept some of them.

@joseph @lauren True, but it can become "evil" when pointing out #FediverseHurdles or #MastodonHurdles is responded to with techie #snobbery ... every time a #newbie expresses frustration with an unintuitive #ux and the response is a haughty #rtfm, you're likely to lose a potential new addition to the #community. We should all aim to make newcomers feel welcome, and an #intuitive ux is essential to that.

It's important that those who work on bringing the #fediverse together don't fall into the #snobbery trap when they hear #newbies complain about the navigation within it. We do understand that we're not in federated clones of #fecesbook or the #birdsite but those sites became popular because they did do some things right. People want #news, #community and #entertainment, so it's important to make navigating such areas of human interaction #intuitive and easy.

I know that it's become fashionable among my generation (Gen X) to dunk on Gen Zers and millennials. But can we stop doing this? They proved last week that they are a major cultural force and arguably MORE principled and committed than the more calcified fortysomethings and fiftysomethings. You can deny their smarts all you like, but, if you do, you'll find that your finger won't be able to locate the current pulse of culture in about two years.
