A frozen world heaves through the void, its bright surface reflecting the light and heat of the Sun back into space. Is this one of the moons of the gas giants? No, it's our own Earth during the Cryogenian period,640 million years ago. These Snowball Earth events caused the entire planet to freeze over for millions of years. Life held on by the skin of its teeth, whether under the ice or in equatorial lakes.

From a quick scan of the article, they don’t mention #geothermal activity. That seems like the most likely explanation for an #oasis like this, but I assume it would show up in the chemical signature. Whatever the explanation, this is impressive if it holds up.
Say it with me now … “More Research Is Needed!” And funding. That helps. A lot.

How life survived the most severe ice age in Earth’s history when the planet was covered in ice and snow? Glacial meltwater created oxygen-rich pockets in the ocean where primitive animals such as sponges could thrive. These oxygen oases were crucial for the survival and evolution of complex life forms which emerged after the ice age ended.

AAAS: "Life may have survived far north of equator during 'Snowball Earth'" "More than 600 M years ago, planet was frozen from pole to pole, covered in half-km-thick ice sheets that darkened every ocean." New geochemical evidence from ancient rocks suggests zones of open ocean may have been present north of the Tropic of Cancer. When temperatures drop, planetary ice caps expand, reflecting more sunlight + creating further cooling. "If the ice manages to creep to roughly 30° to 40° latitude—about where North Africa and the continental United States are today—the global climate enters a runaway freezing cycle and glaciers end up covering the entire planet within a few hundred years." The geologic record indicates at least 2 of these episodes have occurred, the more recent one — the Marinoan Ice Age — was from 654 to 635 million yrs ago. "To study conditions during this period, Xiao and his colleagues examined a thin layer of dark shale found in Shennnongjia National Forest in south China that dates to the Marinoan." The shale was chock full of various algal fossils but also nitrogen compounds, suggesting oxygenated waters were present where N2 + O2 were able to freely interact. But Paul Hoffman, a geologist at Harvard University who pioneered the Snowball Earth hypothesis, argues it's likelier the fossils were from algae in shallow polls of freshwater atop glaciers. More data needed. #snowballearth #paleogeology
My numero uno unpopular geology opinion: snowball earth is a huge crock of sh*t.
I've been in the field with snowball true believers, and every sedimentary structure is "proof of glaciation" and every pebble in a sandstone that looks out of place is "obviously till or a drop stone." One guy even said something to the effect of- "Life likely evolved on earth 3-4 billion years ago, and then was completely killed off by snowball earth 700 million years ago, and life had to start again from scratch." He said this without a shred of evidence and with a completely straight face.
Snowball earth is a catchall that lazy geologists use to hand wave and explain away complex sedimentology that they don't want to think about. Honestly, it's total f*cking BS. Let's call it what it is- snow job earth.

@Fiederels welke bbc docu keek jij? 2001 of 2008? Ik ben de eerste aan het bekijken. Daar wordt de carbonaat afzetting wel in behandeld maar ze gebruiken niet de term ‘cap carbonates’. #snowballearth
When it came to surviving Earth’s chilliest era–roughly 720-580 million years ago—animals had their work cut out for them. There's very little fossil evidence from this time, leaving scientists to wonder what they even looked like. 🧊
