Q: for #RasPi folks.
I've finished a project that means I know have a spare RP4. I know I can Mastodon but I understand #SoapboxFE is less power hungry.
Could I still run #Matrix and #Nextcloud on the computer? I only really keep a calendar and diary on NC. Would this be possible?
I really like the idea of saving the odd Watt here and there! Currently using an NUC for my server.

Use Soapbox FE - #alternative #frontend for #mastodon or #pleroma

@grischa Frage zu #soapboxfe
@alex using #SoapboxFE on #Mastodon via fe.soapbox.pub, on the latest version all the photos are blurred and won't load in the interface. Is this expected/intended behavior?
@alex how come the new Suggested Users carousel is always #6 in the home feed when using #SoapboxFE with #Mastodon when in #TruthSocial it's the top item?

PSA: For anyone who had qualms about using #Soapbox due to #Cloudflare (meaning you could not try #SoapboxFE using fe.soapbox.pub), somebody else is hosting an alternate version of #SoapboxFE on soapbox.masochi.st. In addition to not having #Cloudflare, it has some bug fixes and extra features too.
#soapbox #cloudflare #soapboxfe
One nice bit of #SoapboxFE design; on #Twitter, the "Who To Follow" section has follow buttons. On #Soapbox, it doesn't. This is good. Why?
Because it forces you to actually look at the accounts before following them, giving you more awareness about who you're following.
Here's a #SoapboxFE problem; if the instance rules say I can't post a video and photo together, when I try to make a post it'll tell me I can't do that, and gray out the post I tried to make...but that's it. I feel like it' should bring the post dialog box back up again so I can give it another try.

> Soapbox also makes a backend. This implies that it would be possible for a 3rd party to grab the code for both FE & BE (or maybe just the FE) and self-host it as a service to the public. In that case, then only the 3rd party is forced into CF’s walled garden. They can take a hit for the team. Probably not the general case though. Is anyone hosting Soapbox outside of CF?
I admit that I use fe.soapbox.pub as the FE for all the instances I use, since I thoroughly enjoy the #SoapboxFE experience. But my main acc ATM, social.teci.world, uses both the #SoapboxFE and #SoapboxBE, apparently doesn't use #Cloudflare, and I recommend it because it's usually as close to the latest #Soapbox commits without being on #Gleasonator. Since its a smaller instance, it's less blocked and you get a more complete view of the #Fediverse IIRC

> Gitlab is also open source software so a person could choose to host their own instance of Gitlab if the .com happens to be cloudflared.
True but I think the whole point of OP and crew's message is that using #Cloudflare-d assets are bad, and if #SoapboxFE and #Soapbox are hosted through #Cloudflare, if you wanna access #Soapbox, you'll need to access #Cloudflare, even if you're just mirroring it. It'll do nothing to assuage their admittedly pedantic concerns.
#cloudflare #soapboxfe #soapbox
@thatguyoverthere @dsfgs @alex @batalanto
Of course #Cloudflare is bad, but I don't think #Cloudflare is necessary to use #SoapboxFE or even #Soapbox (I can't remember if #Gitlab uses #Cloudflare or not).
But it's certainly not bad enough to demonize the users or dev over it, especially without pointing people to an alternative.

> It doesn’t matter what basis you’re pimping #soapboxFE on.
You're acting like I'm a paid actor. Go ahead and ask @alex, he's the guy who runs the thing, but I'm telling you, I'm not even affiliated with the project. I just have eyes.
> You are baiting people to patronize a project that has a #falsePositioning problem.
How? You're making a lot of assertions about this project cornering people into a centralized system but you're at a deficit of proof...

It doesn’t matter what basis you’re pimping #soapboxFE on. You are baiting people to patronize a project that has a #falsePositioning problem.
> This isn’t middle school.
If this isn't middle school why are y'all acting like my words are giving you boo-boos lol
> An org that surreptitiously uses centralized tech that feeds a tech giant & imposes that walled garden of surveillance on their users while also promoting other such centralized services yet claiming the contrary & masquerading as a decentralization effort at the same time as asking for money from unwitting people in the fedi… that is what we are talking about.
Then why did you change the subject? Because I never mentioned such an organization.
I think it's funny that you're so up in arms by me saying that I think #SoapboxFE is visually appealing lol like this is one of the strangest triggerings I've ever seen
Looks like there's a new path in #SoapboxFE to authenticate to a remote instance
It used to be instance.url/auth/external but now it's instance.url/login/external
Love it when the icons wig out
