CORONATION STREET: Episode 5,772 - May 31, 2004, ITV

In the early 2000s on this long-running British soap, teenagers Todd and Sarah started dating. By 2004, she was pregnant by him and they were engaged, though he was questioning his sexual orientation.

Partway through the pregnancy, Todd told Sarah that he had realized he was gay and was now dating a nurse named Karl. Shortly thereafter, the pregnancy developed life-threatening complications. In this episode, her family blames Todd and are bitter towards him. In these clips, we also see Todd's boyfriend Karl (who works at the hospital) and Todd's mother, Eileen.

Todd has often been portrayed as immature, self-involved, and irresponsible, even when he tries his (inadequate) best to do the right thing.

DAYS OF OUR LIVES, 5/30/1977, NBC

This week in 1977, this daytime soap was airing a story about a lesbian, Sharon, who'd married a man out of social pressure but was attracted to her straight best friend. Sharon had never accepted her own feelings for women.

In this episode, Sharon had been hospitalized after a suicide attempt. Therapist characters talked about how some people think being gay is a mental illness though it is not and that she needs to accept herself. This was about 3 years after homosexuality was declassified as an illness.

In the next episodes her husband can't cope with her sexuality and tries to pull her out of the hospital, beyond the reach of the supportive liberal psychologists. Sharon and Karl were written off of the series soon thereafter.

As far as I can tell, the first sustained, multi-month queer character on a soap came six years later, on ALL MY CHILDREN.

The short-lived daytime #SoapOpera was created by #AnotherWorld head writer #HardingLemay + producer #PaulRauch and replaced the AW spinoff #Somerset — but it was not an AW spinoff!

It was pulled after 17 weeks, but returned in Dec, 1977 w/ a new title #ForRicherForPoorer. This time, the lead characters *were* introduced on AW, and AW characters crossed over!

After SOMERSET, star #JoelCrothers joined the cast of EDGE!

Gay teacher Michael Delaney (Chris Bruno) comes out to his students during a lesson about the Holocaust, touching off a months-long story arc about whether he should be allowed to keep his job and a parallel plot about a gay male student at the same high school.

Michael's coming out was based on a real-life controversy over Rodney Wilson, a Missouri teacher who had also come out to his students during a Holocaust lesson. The 1995-96 ALL MY CHILDREN story took a dramatic turn months later when a gay student's homophobic brother tried to shoot Michael and ended up killing someone else. https://youtu.be/81rsfRXpP9o

Having said all that, if you like #spaceships , entertaining #TV #SoapOperas and especially the #moonbase , and you have access to #appletvplus , I heartily recommend 'For All Mankind' , (or as we call it in this house 'Space Moms')

Ronald D. Moore rarely lets me down, it's a great fun counterfactual history nonsense, based on the premise that the space race did not stop after #Apollo, and was lead by women, clearly a better timeline than the one we got sold.

#AnnFlood (1932-2022) would have been 90 today.

The #SoapOpera icon played Nancy Karr on #EdgeOfNight for 22 years.
