@DanS Yes, Dan: people (even committed introverts) know that life is hollow without friendship and some version of community engagement—vide “Bowling Alone” by Robert Putnam. I don’t need to remind anyone here that democracy becomes nonfunctional when community connectedness and social capital drop below a critical threshold. We’re seeing that very vividly in the U.S. I hint at underlying causes elsewhere on this thread.

I believe the value of #socialcapital can be evaluated by what I call the "Baby Shower Test". Compare these scenarios:

A young woman wants to learn how to knit. She joins two groups:

• A knitting Facebook group with 200,000 members. And,
• A local knitting group with 7 old ladies.

A year later the young woman gets pregnant. Which group throws her a baby shower?

If you are not involved in a community that would throw a baby shower for a young woman member, you have no #community at all.
