Well, they seem to be suggesting they might try them out in #socialcare... whether they will, of course, is another issue
This picture of how the #socialcare system exploits its foreign #workforce and then treats them as disposable, is wrong & immoral on a number of levels - take five minutes to read this & wonder what our county has become?
[and Merit Healthcare's weasily words in their defence, featured at the end of the article, are in my view best discounted]
TheGuardian: Sent home: how Kenyan’s dream of life as a UK care worker turned sour https://www.theguardian.com/society/2023/sep/03/sent-home-how-kenyans-dream-of-life-as-a-uk-care-worker-turned-sour #Immigrationandasylum #Healthpolicy #Socialcare #Worldnews #Politics #Society #UKnews #Africa #Kenya

A TUC report into the crisis in #socialcare found:
More than three in five (62%) childcare workers & social care workers earn less than the real living wage;
Social care workers earn only about 65% of the median salary for all employees (£21,500 a year compared with £33,000);
Childcare workers earn only 56% of the median salary for all employees (£18,400).
Anyone who thinks social care can be sustained like this is delusional... we need a social rethink!
1/3: A message I wrote to a friend re. healthcare spending of nations, which they had observed to be increasing:
I'm of the (uneducated) opinion that as countries/peoples become more wealthy in peace-time, once they percieve their needs as met, they end up spending that wealth on healthcare. A great tragedy from our perspective is that the best healthcare spending is preventative, but the wildest healthcare spending I observe through anecdote in other countries is curative; notoriously seen in futile end-of-life care in America.
The most obvious homologue - of a nation spending a hoofing amount of it's wealth in a given industry - seems to me the "military-industrial complex". It's a slightly clumsy term for our purpose, but here the military is a function of the government which in turn is a function of the country/peoples. So I think of it as a nation spending a hoofing amount of it's money on funding the industries that manufacture and deliver "warheads on foreheads", so to speak.
The best summary of this was provided by Eisenhower. I paste here words from https://www.usnews.com/opinion/blogs/robert-schlesinger/2011/09/30/the-origins-of-that-eisenhower-every-gun-that-is-made-quote:
> More than a week after Stalin’s death, Eisenhower was talking with speechwriter Emmet Hughes about the address. “Look, I am tired—and I think everyone is tired—of just plain indictments of the Soviet regime,” Ike said. “I think it would be wrong—in fact, asinine—for me to get up before the world now to make another one of those indictments. Instead, just one thing matters. What have we got to offer the world?”

#Exploitation of #CareWorkers in #England is ‘appalling’, says government adviser
#BrianBell says ministers have allowed #England’s creaking #SocialCare system to become too heavily reliant on low-paid foreign workers who are vulnerable to exploitation, the government’s #migration adviser has warned.

I would not disagree. #andyburnham would have sorted out #socialcare quite early on in such an administration. Much of the costly and ineffective obsession with using the private sector would have been abandoned as it was already beginning to be under #brown .

Save our social care: Align care and support worker pay to NHS pay bands.
The Fabian Society think tank – which heavily influences Labour policy - has reflected this in its vision for the future of social care and a prominent Conservative has come out in favour too. We are generating momentum. Now, ahead of the party...

Since moving to England I've seen how much different parts of the UK could learn from each other around the delivery of #SocialCare. This BASW podcast perfectly illustrates that, particularly around learning from the integration of health and social care in Northern Ireland https://shows.acast.com/lets-talk-social-work/episodes/a-ray-of-light #SocialWork
We need a National Care Service like the NHS to fix our #socialcare crisis
It’s precisely what Corbyn proposed to do in 2017.
Here's an eminently sensible six-point plan to 'fix' the #NHS from a consultant #doctor:
1. Clarify GP's role & links with #socialcare (with GPs driving change, not top down 'reform')
2. New (ambitious) national standards
3. Transform the respect accorded to #carers
4. Improve preventative #healthcare
5. Establish an effective #obesity strategy
6. Sort out #mentalhealth services.
Just stating the 6 points shows the damage a decade of #Tory defunding has wrought!

Brownie points for the Department for Education for evaluation of its Children’s #SocialCare #Innovation Programme.
They get a special mention for being good at a thing other departments seem to be failing at (or not even trying).
More on evaluation:
"Short-termism in government and the desire for quick results hinders proper investment in evaluation."
