If you don't have time to read the whole article, today's edition of New Work in Philosophy has a short summary of "An Idle and Most False Imposition: Truth-Seeking, Status-Seeking and the Failure of Epistemic Vigilance."

This is a fascinating result with implications for social epistemology:
"... structured information–sharing networks among clinicians significantly reduce diagnostic errors ... and improve treatment recommendations, as compared to groups of individual clinicians engaged in independent reflection.

Interesting. One excerpt from the abstract:
"... mere media presence fuels implicit personality theories regarding a candidate’s vigor in political contexts." journals.plos.org/plosone/arti

I have a new, open access paper up. In it I argue that, despite the widespread acceptance of the theory of epistemic vigilance, the theory is a poor fit with the evidence: while there is good reason to accept that people ARE vigilant, there is also good reason to believe that their vigilance is NOT epistemic. Instead, the evidence actually supports a theory that I dub the theory of "Machiavellian vigilance."
