So fantastic to see Maria Ressa being interviewed by Stephen Colbert – the platform and attention she deserves for all her courage and fantastic work!
Wise words on the fact-distorting power of social media, and its influence on democracy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xpWevZ5yQz8 #HowToStandUpToADictator #MariaRessa #SocialMediaActivism #HoldTheLine

Feels like the time to dust off my old blog, so I started by writing about how, despite the hype that the #TwitterMigration is getting, it feels to me like lots of people (especially from outside the US/Europe, and from marginalised groups) are staying put over there. I shared some guesses as to why: https://zararah.net/blog/2022/11/11/twitter-or-mastodon-community-activism/ #SocialMediaActivism

@marielgm yup, agree! I wonder what the other #SocialMediaActivism uses might pop up with Mastodon in the coming months/years...
@zararah The only #SocialMediaActivism application I can think of for Mastodon: networking within the movements, precisely because of the cosy conversation you wouldn't necessarily find on Twitter anymore. Outreach to journalists who aren't so famous here yet might be easier? User base and politics IMHO mean I would not devote any small org tech capacity building workshops to Mastodon yet.
I'm enjoying the cosy conversation-feeling of Mastodon – actual people, listening/reading each other! But I do wonder what the downfall of Twitter means for activists who have used it for amplification, for getting people's attention on under-priortised causes. From what I can tell, that 'amplification' part is not so built into Mastodon as a platform (Or is it? I would love to hear other takes on this!) #SocialMediaActivism #MastodonMigration #TwitterMigration
