Fascinating thread & subtweet chain going on at where owner EM discovered the : twitter.com/elonmusk/status/16. We published about it and how it operates in our paper "Beyond Clicktivism: What Makes Digitally Native Effective? An Exploration of the Sleeping Giants Movement" doi.org/10.1177/20563051211035 Will be interesting to see if the platform may begin to algorithmically interfere with this .

Cool to have the find my post about chokepoint and whether there is enough democracy in practice to fundamentally alter the economic system. The idea of a federation and . It also brings up thoughts ads to what is seen in versus direct democracy in the consensus model seen in the movement, the and other autonomist movements and experiments in new forms of participatory democracy and a move away from majoritarian conceptions.

ACTION LOGIC

Your should speak for itself. Its inner logic should be obvious to the outside eye. When a protest has good action logic, its dramatic challenge to power tells a clear and compelling story.

Here is another essential piece from the Beautiful Trouble's toolbox for .

Aha. Thanks. I see the need for a Fediverse entity that is specifically aimed at providing support and tools for social movements (not merely events), and it's pretty clear that Mobilizon is not it, based its *many* shortcomings for that role.

I have learned from your experience. Many thanks.

I'm sympathetic to the UK change of tactics for a while, in fact I admire them for trying something different. I also like the idea of gathering a lot of people in a less conflictual than previously. But protest that involves everyone going home at a specified time is quite weak. My years of and experience has taught me how weak those protests are. Why not go out in the streets on April 21 and stay there for a week?

Should Social Movement Work be Paid?

An online talk with Dean Spade
Thu, January 5, 2023, 7:00 PM – 8:30 PM EST

eventbrite.com/e/dean-spade-sh

"In this talk, Dean Spade will explore a vexing question being discussed in many movement groups: should people be paid to do this work? Should groups should seek funding to create staff positions or stipends for people participating in the work? Is it a matter of racial, economic, gender and disability justice to pay people to be part of movement groups? Does the process of raising money tie groups too closely to philanthropists or governments? Does paying participants limit the potential growth of movements? Is payment the best way to recognize labor in groups? Is paying people a good way to reduce barriers to participation? How does paying people impact the culture of social movement work? Does it institutionalize the work? These questions have immediate practical significance, and also unearth larger themes about what it means to do resistance organizing within capitalism where people are demobilized, isolated, and struggling to meet basic needs."

If your is partly about spreading ideas, and young people are a big constituency, and you aren't making videos for social media, why not?

Your point resonates with my own experience. I have indeed noticed that using Mastodon I seem able to communicate with a small sample of people and do not have a sense of social movements.

Mastodon seems very good for its purposes, but those purposes do not include facilitating social movements — that is, having tools and algorithms that support such movements so that they can . . .

One challenge I've found about being a in progressive/rad spaces has been talking to people about the trade-off between ethics and usability. Shiny products with thousands of hours of UX research and development come with the baggage of who can afford to pay for that and how they intend to make their investment back. Scrappier solutions may not *look great* but they can *be good.*
