Tomorrow morning, my last newsletter on Substack goes out to anyone subscribed there, linking to this post, and then I'll be deleting my account completely in a few weeks.

To those of you who also have newsletters on Substack and aren’t ready to move yet, no judgment. I’m pretty sure I’ll be unsubscribed from yours when I delete my account, but if I can access an RSS feed for it, I’ll continue reading that way.

I signed up for Twitter 15 years ago in July 2008, and the first 5 years were amazing, despite it slowly supplanting my blog as my online hub. It's been a total shitshow for the last 5 years, though, and the Musk Error led me to finally parking my account last Fall.

51K+ tweets later, I've officially deactivated my account, to be automatically deleted 30 days from now. If you see "glecharles" appear there in the future, it's absolutely not me.

🙁

My to-do list this week: 1) Delete Twitter account for good. 2) Send final newsletter via Substack before moving to an alternative platform. 3) Find alternative newsletter platform.

The internet in 2023 really sucks. ☹️

I missed the latest shenanigans from the clowns running , but it looks like I'll definitely be changing my newsletter host when I'm back from vacation rather than waiting to find something better because they're clearly happy being the Nazi Bar. FTS.

"Meta's 'friendly' Threads collides with unfriendly internet"

JFC, Reuters! Zuckerberg is NEVER going to be a friend of journalism, stop playing his PR games and frame Threads for the Trojan Horse — privacy threat and wall-building — all Meta initiatives fundamentally are.

"That’s a problem for Threads, because the relationship between Meta and the journalism industry is, well, fraught. Today’s journalism industry is full of people who lived through the 2015 'pivot to video,' and recall the 2018 revelations that it was all a lie and Facebook knew it was a lie."

@davekarpf weighs in on why Threads could kill Twitter and still fail, and why journalists, in particular, are part of the problem.

Remember Vox, Storytlr, and Posterous? What about GeoCities and LiveJournal? The internet has always been ephemeral; owning your own domain and making it your hub has always been a best practice.

I wrote this back in 2010 during a similar period of platform upheaval, and despite experimenting with multiple platforms since then, my own site has been my home base since I started self-hosting WordPress sometime in 2008.

My days of early adoption ended with SnapChat; I don't even rush to secure my username on most new platforms anymore. I'll be a reluctant follower from now on, waiting for new platforms to build audiences and offer something distinctive and worthwhile rather than jumping in to help make that happen.

Kudos to anyone still willing to beta test everything and sharing their thoughts about it here. So far, you've confirmed neither Bluesky nor Threads are for me. 👍🏽

Beyond directly reported local news, the Star-Ledger does a solid job of publishing a useful daily print edition with smart curation of other sources to create something distinct from NJ.com's online firehose.

In the many months since I left Twitter, I'm not always in the loop on the latest news as it's breaking, but I'm more informed about what's actually happening as the facts settle into place and are put into context. I'm also not constantly doomscrolling!

"We’re only a few years removed from companies closing down their own internal support and moving their forums to places like Reddit and, less usefully, Discord. To see them already have to start moving this stuff back in-house is as sure a sign as ever that the ‘Enshittification’ of platforms like Reddit, TikTok, YouTube and Twitch is now very much in full swing..."

Mistreating unpaid moderators can have other consequences. FAFO. 🤷🏽‍♂️

"So LinkedIn set about trying to make its feed more relevant and informative, and not just engaging and sticky."

I've definitely noticed signal:noise has improved on over the past few months after drifting dangerously into Facebook/Twitter territory.

Good to know it's a purposeful move, although it's probably driven more by racists outing themselves at work than reining in wannabe gurus chasing "scale." 🤷

"Owning" a community has been on many companies' bucket list for years, but few ever understood what that really means. A company can never "own" a community, it can only serve them.

Reddit is realizing they only own the infrastructure and their poor maintenance of it led to others filling the gaps for them. Rather than being a better partner or providing better services, they've decided to make things worse for everyone — and actual community leaders aren't having it.

All indications suggest this is primarily about goosing projected profitability ahead of an IPO so current investors can cash out, and they're not terribly concerned about the long-term impact because that will become someone else's problem after the IPO.

Unlike Twitter, Reddit's power users (the moderators) have actual power and are using it rather than just rolling over because moving is hard. 😐

Two of the most consistent positives I keep seeing about are the amount of shitposting there is, and how many Twitter power users are there — and neither of those are things I miss about Twitter. 🤷🏽‍♂️

Nevertheless, I think @davekarpf makes a strong case for why it has a better chance of replacing Twitter than Mastodon, and I hope he's right because I didn't come here looking for a Twitter replacement.

"As a result, the Twitter connection on Jetpack Social will cease to work, and your blog posts will no longer be auto-shared to Twitter... In the near future, we are adding the ability to auto-share to Instagram and Mastodon."

I removed Twitter from my share options when I stopped using it last year, and now it's disappearing from Jetpack completely because Musk is a genius at business things. 😐

That this is news to anyone is amazing, but that it's a key figure behind a major social platform is jaw-droppingly appropriate.

"But social media for a long time has been one of the ways writers and artists connect in part with their audience and doubly so with their communities. And publishers have shoved a lot of our collective eggs into those baskets, so when Twitter really shits the bed, we need to find alternatives."

PS: NPR isn't making empty threats, either. They've removed Twitter from their sharing options on articles, and their profile is no longer linked in the site's footer. 💣
