Look... if you treat your employees well enough then your workers will not likely feel the inclination to unionize... however, how does it really hurt you if you let them. An employer can offer great benefits at the macro level that do not translate to the local level. Some stores are going to be more dangerous, some stores are going to be in places where higher wages are really not that high.

I don't understand why people are flabbergasted when I say I am fine with 50% (or more) income tax if it means guaranteed housing, food, water, healthcare, childcare and education. For most people, these are the things they would spend the $ on anyways.

The fact that food, water, and shelter are not a by right necessity in this country still blows my mind. Mixed use, mixed economic housing is one of the smallest investments localities can make that pays some of the greatest dividends. Projects don't work, moving the homeless somewhere else does not work, relying on charities has not worked, and no one should go to sleep in this country not knowing where they will sleep or eat the next day.

I wish guaranteed benefit would make a major comeback rather than guaranteed contribution in the US. Heck, even a required hybrid system would be great. Life is a heck of a lot easier when you know that your retirement isn't solely based on the market conditions the day you decide to retire.
