Sociological research is often criticised for providing "excuses" for people doing bad things, preventing them from being rightfully blamed and punished. This special issue looks at social scientific debates about such "exculpatory" consequences:

Finishing my Friday with this excellent read: “Fractal approaches to scaling transformations to sustainability”
I deeply appreciate when someone has done the thinking and writing that pulls together a bunch of threads I’m interested in. I’m very excited now to use this as a starting point for engaged #research projects. The big picture framing I’ve been using is “societal transitions for planetary wellbeing”… and I love how this fractal metaphor is helping me connect small, feasible initiatives and actions with much larger purposes and objectives.

Happy birthday Juergen #Habermas (b. 1929). 🥂 🎂

for the #SocialWorkers that I am teaching #SocialTheory it's been easier to connect with feminist theory. unfortunately when presented with specific cases to reflect on the theories we've been studying they come up with conservative initiatives. State structure is pretty embedded in our colleagues. it's gonna take a lot of effort to train independent social workers in #Mexico.

this month I'll start teaching #SocialTheory to a group of #SocialWorkers. I'm going to focus on #marxism, #CriticalTheory, #feminism and #complexitytheory. Social workers in #mexico are not used to this kind of theories. Let's see what happens in the next days.

My book 'The Invisible Order' seems to be in discount!
Everything you always wanted to know about #SocialTheory (but were afraid to ask).
I don't know how long this campaign will last, but I would grab it quickly!
Again, I continue to promote my #SocialTheory and #Sociology book 'The Invisible Order' (2022).
Prof. Mark Blyth also kindly wrote an endorsement for my book.
According to Blyth, the unconscious aspect must be taken into account when considering the social order.
-> Creating order requires more than conscious choices.
If you're thinking what his 'non-realist' means, continue to read the thread!

I continue to promote my #SocialTheory and #Sociology book 'The Invisible Order' (2022).
Prof. Patrik Aspers was kind enough to write an endorsement for the book.
According to Aspers, we take the prevailing social order for granted, even in social sciences. Thus, we cannot see how institutions work.

I haven't promoted my #SocialTheory and #Sociology book 'The Invisible Order' (2022) here yet, but here it comes.
I begin by bringing out the abstract, where I addresses the problem of institutionalised order in modern capitalist societies with highly developed division of labour.
From more historical point of view, my attempt is to combine the so-called 'integration' and 'conflict' theory perspectives - an attempt that I haven't seen done anywhere before.
Please, correct me if I'm wrong.

There are many, many more that I wanted to include but couldn’t confirm if they were/are #Jewish or not.

Selection of #Jewish scholars who influenced my own academic thinking (and who were only mentioned in passing if at all as being Jewish in introductory classes). Who’s your favorite? Who do you dislike? (Glut of men = sociology courses in the ‘90s)
In no particular order:
Émile Durkheim
Karl Marx (family converted to Xian before his birth)
Georg Simmel (same)
Robert K. Merton
György Lukács
Edmund Husserl
Ludwig Wittgenstein (assimilated)
Zygmunt Bauman

Just asked two literature reviews of a #SocialTheory field from #openAI. The first time it listed:
- Structural theory;
- Critical theory;
- Postmodernism; and
- Cultural theory.
2nd:
- Structuralism;
- Symbolic interactionism;
- Functionalism; and
- Postmodernism.
In a nutshell.
No idea why the list changed in between the tests.
How accurate are these? What is missing? Should we be able to do these kinds of classifications of social theory in the first place?

THE MULTIPLE MEANINGS OF THEORY
This paper argues that common definitions of 'theory' are too restrictive. To redress this, the paper elaborates a typology that clarifies multiple meanings of theory and allows for several kinds of scientific knowledge
