The soft plastics issue in Oz is a fucking crisis! WhatDoYouMean on YT breaks down the glorious clusterfuck that is the REDcycle's failed "because of its overwhelming success" soft plastic recycling business plan.

soooo it's been quite a while now since the program was paused, and while it was problematic in the first place (abc.net.au/education/war-on-wa), does anybody know if we're any closer to a new soft plastics recycling program in Australia?

Or, even better, any closer to getting as many soft plastics as possible out of the retail landscape?

These things need to be banned. They were a farce to begin with but now that we know soft plastics are not being recycled, should be outlawed.

Hi Mastodonians :Pooh_wave:

For years I have been dutifully collecting my soft plastics and taking them to the supermarket as part of the REDcycle initiative.

But that's :cancelled_1: :cancelled_2: :cancelled_3:

And yet, I cannot shake myself of the habit of collecting them.

Anyone know if any other initiatives to recycle soft plastics are out there?

In Victoria (Aust)?

Thanks.

Aus Supermarkets lamenting the demise of . This was always a exercise. These programs are just an excuse for not making the necessary changes in behaviour. Just stop using all that packaging! Problem solved permanently.

RedCycle has announced that it will pause its collection of soft plastics for recycling from tomorrow (November 9th). It will re-start at some unspecified time, but there's a stockpile that hasn't been processed, so, if you've been collecting soft plastics to drop off at your supermarket, you will need to hold onto them for some time, until collections re-start. Watch for updates on redcycle.net.au.
