I asked about takedown requests; answer was that Software Heritage is based in France and subject to those laws (e.g. right to be forgotten), so they have a takedown form and will evaluate requests. If they do take code down, that decision gets forwarded to mirrors and its up to mirrors to decide whether to also take down the content. Primary assumption is that it's only free software that's being archived right now.
@olasd explains that #SoftwareHeritage has collected more than a petabyte of source code, which is further replicated 3 times across different backends/storage providers
@fraufriedrich Fortunately, they have been archived in #softwareheritage : https://www.softwareheritage.org/
Fellow hacker Simon Tournier did an experiment: reproducing a pure #Guix 2020 paper in the worst-case scenarioâshutting down network access except for #SoftwareHeritage and #Disarchive, and from there rebuilding everything from source.

Spoiler alert: there are lots of bumps on the road. But it works in the end and there are many lessons we can learn to improve on it.

SWHIDs, the âintrinsic identifiersâ for source code that originate in #SoftwareHeritage, are being standardized:

@martyn @datacite The nice interplays between #softwareheritage #SWHID, @datacite DOI are evidenced, with their role in #SoftwarePublication, even with automated processes such as the HERMES project (https://project.software-metadata.pub/) ..

@salarua A lot of them are around, but the other that comes to mind beyond, obviously the Internet Archive, is the #SoftwareHeritage organization.
My examples are obviously constrained by my interests.
#Bookwyrm is a #fediverse implementation that positions itself a bit as an alternative to goodreads & similar proprietary reading & review platforms.
Alternative search-engines are also becoming hotter by the day since corporate engines seem to have given up on being useful.

Research Software certainly deserve PIDs, as all other research products, actors, funders... do.
#SoftwareHeritage (https://www.softwareheritage.org/) does provide the SWHID PID for software and source code, which plays well with DOIs.
@rouge Meanwhile, a bunch of other EU-based #FOSS organizations (including us from #SoftwareHeritage) have published this open letter about the #CRA: https://newsroom.eclipse.org/news/announcements/open-letter-european-commission-cyber-resilience-act
@wilfredh In #Guix, we went to great lengths to tackle disappearing source files with #SoftwareHeritage and #Disarchive:

@stroppypanda @neil #SoftwareHeritage.org (#SWH) exists for precisely this purpose. You can get more redundancy by hosting at a more ethical forge than #Github. Check out this list: https://git.sdf.org/humanacollaborator/humanacollabora/src/branch/master/forge_comparison.md

All the computer code that governs our lives and liberty should be open to public scrutiny in this new era. That's a big part of why I support #SoftwareHeritage and #OpenSource

#Software is becoming a key to democracy as more and more citizen contact points with government are automated. All such systems MUST be #OpenSource and archived at #softwareheritage

Timothy Sample just published an updated âPreservation of Guixâ report:
https://ngyro.com/pog-reports/latest/
Key takeaway is that 87% of the source code of packages present in #Guix today is archived via #SoftwareHeritage + #Disarchive, 77% if we look at all the packages that appeared in Guix between May 2019 and today.
