" #SOLAR #CYCLE UPDATE: This website, Spaceweather.com, began in 1997 with the first stirrings of Solar Cycle 23 (SC23). The timing was right. In the years that followed, SC23 produced the strongest solar flare of the Space Age (X45), the infamous Halloween Storms of 2003, and multiple episodes of Northern Lights as far south as Texas and California. Could it happen again? New Solar Cycle 25 is heading in the same direction"

"Active sunspot region 3386 produced a strong X1.5 solar flare at 20:46 UTC (Aug 7). A fast moving coronal mass ejection (CME) became visible soon after and because the source region is now located behind the west limb, it should be directed away from our planet. Proton levels streaming past Earth reached the minor (S1) radiation storm threshold as a result."

Yikes! I hope AR 3386 calms down before it becomes Earth-facing again (in about 2 weeks).

Another X-Flare!
August 7, 2023 @ 20:50 UTC
"Now located behind the west limb, AR 3386 just unleashed another X-Flare. The latest event was an X1.5 at 20:46 UTC (Aug 7). Due to the location behind the limb, it is possible that it could have been somewhat stronger than detected. Any associated CME will be directed away from Earth. More to follow whenever necessary."

#CME Update:
August 6, 2023 @ 12:10 UTC
"The X1.6 solar flare around AR 3386 was responsible for the second of two halo CMEs on Saturday. The first CME was the result of a long duration M-Flare/Filament eruption earlier in the day. Both appear to have an Earth directed component with glancing blows possible beginning August 8th. The combination could generate minor (G1) to moderate (G2) storming at higher latitudes. Aurora sky watchers should be alert beginning Tuesday.
"UPDATE: The latest NOAA/SWPC update is reporting that the second CME (X1.6 Flare) will be a miss. Even with that forecast, I still believe that the eastern flank could still graze past Earth."

"GEOMAGNETIC STORM WATCH (G2): Geomagnetic storms are possible on Aug. 1st when a #CME is expected to hit Earth's magnetic field. Minor G1-class storms are likely with a chance of escalating to category G2. The CME was hurled almost directly toward Earth by the eruption of a magnetic filament in the sun's northern hemisphere on July 28th. Aurora alerts: SMS Text
"#PROTONS ARE *STILL* HITTING EARTH'S ATMOSPHERE: For the second day in a row, energetic protons from the sun are raining down on Earth's atmosphere. This is called a "radiation storm" (S1-class), and it was caused by a magnificent eruption on July 28th.
"The blast site was hidden from view just behind the sun's northwestern limb. Earth-orbiting satellites registered an M4-class solar flare, but the underlying explosion was stronger. It was probably an X-flare partially eclipsed by the edge of the sun.
"How can a sunspot not facing Earth send so many protons in our direction? The answer is 'the #ParkerSpiral.' Take a look. As the sun spins, its magnetic field spirals like water flowing from a twirling lawn sprinkler. Lines of magnetic force emerging from behind the sun's northwestern limb (where the explosion happened) spiral back and make a direct connection to Earth. It's a superhighway for energetic protons.
"This #RadiationStorm looks like it will continue at S1 levels for at least one more day. Its main effect is a polar cap absorption event (PCA) inside the Arctic Circle. Right now, #shortwave radios around the north pole aren't working very well."

This is the same area that shot out a huge #CME the other day. It was not Earth-facing, but still affected us. However, the sunspot will be facing us THIS WEEKEND! Hold onto your hats!
"BIG FARSIDE SUNSPOT: There's a spot on the farside of the sun so large it is affecting the way the whole sun vibrates. Helioseismic echoes pinpoint the active region in the sun's southern hemisphere not far behind the sun's southeastern limb. It should rotate into view this weekend."

via #Spaceweather: MYSTERY #CME SPARKS GEOMAGNETIC STORM
"Unexpectedly, a CME hit Earth's magnetic field on July 25th (2235 UT), sparking a G1-class geomagnetic storm. It is unclear if this is the early arrival of a CME originally expected on July 27th or a completely different CME which was previously overlooked. Because of the uncertainty, a minor geomagnetic storm watch is still in effect for July 27th."

Major Farsided Event + Fainter Earth directed #CME
July 24, 2023 @ 19:30 UTC
"A large halo coronal mass ejection (CME) was observed leaving the Sun during the past few hours and it looks to be related to a major farsided solar event. It was so powerful that despite taking place on the other side of the Sun, energetic #proton levels streaming past Earth are currently on the rise. Because this was farsided, the CME itself is directed away from our planet.
"In other news, a faint CME observed on Sunday following a filament eruption is predicted to reach Earth by July 27th. A minor (G1) geomagnetic storm watch was officially added for that day."
#spaceweather #solarham #cme #proton #solarcycle25 #solarflares #Solar
"A SIGNIFICANT EXPLOSION ON THE SUN (UPDATED): We've been waiting for this. Big sunspot AR3363 just produced a significant #SolarFlare, a long-duration M6-class event during the early hours of July 18th. NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory recorded the blast near the sun's southwestern limb:
"Energetic protons accelerated by the flare have reached Earth and are now peppering the top of our planet's atmosphere. This is called a 'radiation storm.' According to data from NOAA's GOES-16 satellite, it is a category S2 event.
"Although the explosion was not X-class, it was more powerful than many X-flares would be. Why? Because it lasted so long. The flare's X-ray output was above M5 for more than an hour and above M1 for nearly 4 hours. It had plenty of time to lift a substantial CME out of the sun's atmosphere.
"Indeed, #SOHO coronagraphs have since detected a bright CME emerging from the blast site
Although the #CME is not heading directly for Earth, it appears to have an Earth-directed component. A NASA model suggests it could deliver an effective glancing blow as early as July 20th (0000 UT). NOAA is doing their own modeling, and results should be available soon.
"Our preliminary forecast: The CME's flank will reach Earth on July 20th. Its impact could spark G1 to G2-class geomagnetic storms, with a slight chance of G3. Stay tuned."

A hearty welcome to folks who have recently come over to Mastodon from the #BirdSite! I recognize some of my old Tweeps over here, and I'm so glad you made it! So, back on the birdsite, I maintained a public list titled #GlobalAlerts. Since coming to Mastodon, I've started a new list, but unfortunately, I can't share it.
However, I copied and pasted my list into a text file -- which includes one of my favorite accounts from the birsdsite, @ai6yr, who graciously hosts and maintains a number of alert-bots. If you miss having #NWS and #EmergencyAlerts, please consider creating your own list with these accounts... Note: #Earthquake related accounts are at the bottom of the list (since there are quite a few here). Suggestions welcome!

#SolarMaximum could hit us harder and sooner than we thought. How dangerous will the sun's chaotic peak be?
The sun is quickly approaching a major peak in solar activity. Experts warn it could potentially begin by the end of 2023, years before initial predictions suggested.
By Harry Baker, June 23, 2023
"Originally, scientists predicted that the current solar cycle would peak in 2025. But a bumper crop of sunspots, solar storms and rare solar phenomena suggest solar maximum could arrive by the end of this year at the earliest — and several experts told Live Science we are poorly prepared. "

Now we know how a solar storm took out a fleet of Starlinks
by Carolyn Collins, April 3, 2023
"The folks at Starlink found that out the hard way in February 2022. On January 29th that year, the sun belched out a class M 1.1 flare and related coronal mass ejection. Material from the sun traveled out on the solar wind and arrived at Earth a few days later. On February 3, Starlink launched a group of 49 satellites to an altitude only 130 miles above Earth's surface. They didn't last long, and now solar physicists know why."

SURPRISE GEOMAGNETIC STORM: Surprising forecasters, a crack opened in Earth's magnetic field on May 19th. #Solar wind poured through the gap, sparking a G2-class #geomagnetic storm. Naked-eye auroras were visible across many northern-tier US states while photographic auroras descended as far south as Missouri (latitude +40.2N):
"'The night started off with a surprise passage of #Starlink satellites whose 21 or so members flared to incredibly bright for a few seconds,' says photographer Dan Bush of Albany, Missouri. 'Then the red auroras came and were visible to my camera for about an hour or so.'
"This event was probably caused by a near-miss #CME--one of many that left the sun last week on trajectories slightly off the sun-Earth line. South-pointing magnetic fields in the CME's wake washed over Earth. Those south-pointing fields partially cancelled Earth's north-pointing magnetic field, lowering our defenses against the solar wind."

Hold onto your hats! Very active sunspot region 3310 just belched out an M 8.9 fare (almost X-class), and is about to become Earth-facing.
Via Spaceweather.com - A DANGEROUS SUNSPOT: Growing sunspot AR3311 has an unstable 'beta-gamma-delta' magnetic field that harbors energy for strong solar flares. NOAA forecasters say there is a 75% chance of M-class flares and a 35% chance of X-flares on May 21st. "
