Here's some quick photos of my 3D printing and soldering ventilation setup! I don't want to wire too much about it but I'm using AC venting and an inline fan to throw fumes away from my desk and printer. See next post for printer photos.

In limbo after a session slaving over a hot soldering iron, lots of flux and fine solder braid trying to get a 24-pin 0.5mm-pitch connector soldered onto a @MCQN_Ltd prototype PCB that @huffeec has been working on.

Just waiting on a final inductor to be soldered before we power it up and see if I've had any joy with it.

I'm looking at picking up my first #soldering iron and stepping into the world of hardware repair - Any recommendations?

I currently just use the syringe it shipped in, but I want something that is easier to re-seal or close (I keep my soldering stuff in a tool bag since I don't solder that often, and I don't want to make a mess).

When #soldering wires to a Lithium charge/discharge board make sure you connect them to the correct terminals. Connecting the output wires to the input terminals was in no way dangerous, just very stupid.

All fixed now, but I was a bit confused as to why my LED tape was not illuminating for a moment.

We did a little patching to bridge 2 shorter LED strips today. We soldered across the pads then put hot glue on both sides and squeezed it flat with heat shrink. Now every square is filled in. Next is to work out how to increase the voltage of 3.3v from the microcontroller for the data channel that needs 5v. #LED #Soldering #Noisebridge

Just remembered the trick to make soldering paste easy. Basically you use a stencil to place a glob of paste on the stencil and scrape the paste over the holes to place it exactly where you want it. Then I just need to place the wires and heat the paste. That would make this process fast and repeatable. #soldering https://youtu.be/sOZ_Bry957k

Have any tips for me? I think some kind of jig that holds the pads and wires together while separating the pads to keep the solder separate would make this faster and more reliable. I could drop a piece of solder wire over each pad to melt with an iron. Maybe I could shape ceramic to do this. Does something already exist? #soldering #ledlighting

The risk of buying dodgy China clones from #AliExpress is that you sometimes get junk and have to fix it yourself.

In this case the circuit diagram is public, so there's no good reason to have the wrong components on the PCB 😠

Had to slaughter an old Nokia charger to find a 1μF capacitor to fix this. The component tester I built a while ago came in very handy for this.

And completed in several laps. Using hot air blower for the #SMD stuff and old-fashioned soldering iron for the throgh-hole and minor rework. So in spite of .5mm pith IC's, and 0402 passives, #electronics can still be done at home ... if you have enough magnifying glasses, a steady hand for the tweezers and buy a bit of extra #soldering equipment, like hotplate and hot air blower.

Crafters, find or make a well-ventilated space.

If you're creating dust or fumes, having a place with outside air supply and roof, or strong air filtration, is essential. I've used bathrooms and kitchens with exhaust fans, garages, and screen porches. Some 3D printer folks have literal fume hoods. It's essential to your health, just like #PPE.
