A friend of mine asked about the charging port on my car, casually asking if it was a port.

That’s a rabbit hole in which actually DOES NOT use any fast charging port you’d recognize from another country.

Japan uses a fast charging port called . This, literally, comes from the phrase “Cha de mo” or loosely “how about tea?” Which in Japan is closer to an invitation to a light meal.

This charging port, is almost literally named “how about a snack?”

A slight bit of explanation is needed. Pretty universally, rapid chargers in Japan are time limited to 30 minutes. It’s an odd quirk, but it’s quite predictable, and they generally charge by the minute, not the KWh.

Literally, the rapid chargers were designed to take as long as a light meal to charge a car (at that time) from 20 to 80%.

My car, a , needs a 100kW charger, to achieve this, but a lighter car like a leaf, is perfectly suited to the most common 50kW chargers.

Japan just does things differently.

Second time charging my car at Ukita park in Tokyo, first time in the 50 kw spot. Also first time with the 1 hour free pass.

The is an expensive car, and it feels weird to cheap out of ¥300 yen just to charge the battery 1/3 of the way, but it’s a kind of game by now.

宇喜田公園で車の充電2回目、50kw機器の1回目。1時間フリーパスも初めて。

スバル は高めな車からバッテリーの3分の一を充電する為300円をあえてケチるのは少し変に感じるがもうゲームになってきた。

I’ve resisted buying a in as most of the time it just isn’t needed and is too
expensive.

Last week I took delivery of a and I must say, it is an amazing car.

Not only that, there is a discount card in Tokyo you can get as an , FCEV or PHEV driver which lets you park 1 hour free at public parks. Seems like an odd benefit until you realize many public have charging stands, including rapid chargers, which are free with parking.

Now with the parking discount, the charging via public parks is 100% free, so long as you’re in and out in 1 hour. Rapid chargers here universally limit you to 30 minutes. Not bad.

and other malls have also started to install both rapid and mode 3 chargers as well, and those typically have a 1 hour limit but are much cheaper or even free in many cases.

This is a big EV, and the wheelbase is definitely long compared to other cars I’ve driven, but it’s actually really hard to tell while driving. Fun car.
