Cultural production on the internet has always been a mystery to me. Like why did #SomethingAwful or #4Chan produce so much before they went straight into the toilet? Same with #Reddit.

This makes me think that if some version of the #Metaverse ever takes off, the most interesting implementation won't be made by #Meta. They may build the most used one, or the most profitable one, but I doubt it will be the one that produces anything interesting.

@zyk one more zyk comment, my daughter is 18 years old and she was the only person in #SomethingAwful whose registration date was the same as her birth date. Not just the same month and day, the same year too! My wife squeezed her out and I returned home and registered her account, "zyk" of course, on the month, day and year of her birth!

I was a #SomethingAwful person for 15 or so years until #Lowtax went insane and eventually killed himself and I might just be an ex #Reddit person now as well. New admin at #SA isn't great and maybe just opening a new reddit account for #JWST and some other subs will work, who knows. #LicensaTheAPIAndScrewTheUsers is pretty bad though.

He was terrible in a lot of ways, but #SomethingAwful was a big deal to me in the early-mid aughts, and it kinda made waves.

Slenderman was born there. It's why 4chan exists.

Its. been a good year now and I still havent fully processed the death of Lowtax from #somethingawful . This might sound weird to younger folks, but that forum was super formative for me, and for a lot of lefty dudes. No, my progressivism was neither originated there (I was getting arrested by cops at demos a decade before that forum even existed) and it wasn't made stronger by it either. But watching that forum transform in the wake of George Bush from a bit of a libertarian hellhole into one of the *weirder* outposts of leftist internet culture (that had itself birthed 4chan out of the detrius of those it banned) which in turn birthed weird twitter, the dirtbag left, the "we are definately not the dirtbag left" left, and far too much tankyism was a wild ride, and Lowtax was there completely confused and alienated by it all the whole time.

Lowtax was not a fascist, buy he was a domestic abuser, an alcoholic, resolutely bad at
not getting himself cancelled repeatedly, and often times just an awful person. But after his suicide I was repulsed by the behavior of a lot of people towards his memory, in a situation where his very online family where forced to watch this performative denouncing of the dead. Because for better or worse, he, and those around him where Humans.

We need to be gentle with each other. We dont know what pain people are enduring. We dont know if the bad online behavior is a result of suffering. Be kind. And be kind to yourself.

I maintain that this notion of the #firstamendment being applicable to twitter is a bad argument. It wasn't true before and it isn't true now. All that said, it is a problem, even if its not a violation of the law for #Elon to moderate #twitter like #Lowtax from #SomethingAwful

Twitter's size and importance means that it should be moderated responsibly. On SA, you might get banned for personally irritating the mods and the suspension message would be a picture of tarantula on someone's penis
