#SongOfTheWeek shows a band about to hit peak. #mybloodyvalentine had been a great band since "Isnt Anything" and it's accompanying EP's. But the "Tremolo" EP's best track, "Honey Power", was a teaser for "Loveless". "Honey Power" has as perfect a song structure as the band would record. Like most MBV tracks it's about some sensual experience and words are vague, but Bilinda's vocals are ethereal, the melody soars, and the guitars sting. Sleeper classic #vinyl

#doowop is one of those genres which everyone seems to love but which has never been able to make a modern comeback. Which is fine because the great stuff recorded should be how the genre is remembered. #SongOfTheWeek is The Marcels, "Blue Moon". Featuring a catchy "bompbompada badangadangdang" vocal, every element is superb and basically perfect. The lead singer pleading for his lover, the baritone doing baritone things ("BLUUUUUEEEEEE MOOOOOOON"). #vinyl #1960s

Rock and pop music is filled with gem #onehitwonders including those minor songs. #SongOfTheWeek, the The Passions "I'm in Love with a German Film Star", is a prime example that are always good ditties to uncover. The lyrics are almost simplistic in the message. The vocalist is in love with one she saw in German movies ("it reeeeally moooooved me!"). But the echo-y guitar and the hook delivers Also the crescendo is a classic #newwave moment. I'm in love also. #80s

#SongOfTheWeek involves a dance-pop diva pivoting into a guitar based sound. Normally that is awkward and embarrassing. But #KylieMinogue has the warbly and hesitant vocals to make the Britpop-ish "Some Kind Of Bliss" work. Press and fans didn't warm to the sound, nor the trip-hop elements on the accompanying (good) "Impossible Princess". But "Bliss" is blast of joy, one of her finest singles. "Can't Get You Out of My Head" doesn't happen without the diversion #90s

In #Jamaica this week so #SongOfTheWeek will be a classic from Desmond Dekker. "Israelites" does not seem to be a story about the #Israelites group, rather social commentary on the effects of poverty on Jamaicans. Starting with Desmond's distinctive voice alone, it stirs up emotions. The song sways and grooves, meaning it can be enjoyed even aside from the lyrics. But the lyrics and melody they are connected to pushes this scorcher over the top. #reggae #vinyl

I never really felt the urge to delve into #industrialrock but the #SongOfTheWeek is a banger from its 80s heyday. Big Black's "Passing Complexion" features ringleader (and anti #steelydan purveyor) #stevealbini. Featuring one of the greatest guitar parts of the decade (dadadadadadadada WAH WAH!!!) it almost doesn't matter what remains. However the tale of a person being able to "pass" as another race is almost funny as is the "he had what THEY call/passing complexion!" refrain #80s #indie

#SongOfTheWeek was and still is an unlikely pop single. “Desire Lines” from Lush runs about and a half minutes and is slow. Really slow. And not cheery sounding like some more likely single-ready cuts off the album ‘Split’ (like the stellar “Lit Up”). However the song is a prime example of an “epic” #shoegazing/#dreampop tune. Between Emma Anderson’s doleful lyrics and Miki Berenyi’s convincing singing, you feel the pain and ennui in the song. #90s #vinyl #british https://youtube.com/watch?v=1ccElDZUTpQ&feature=share

#SongOfTheWeek is off the frustratingly inconsistent and pretentious (yet still somehow underrated) #stylecouncil album “Confessions of a Pop Group”. Jazzy and soulful, and sounding like it belonged to an MOR group, “Changing of the Guard” is one of the highlights of the group’s intriguing history. #paulweller and Dee C Lee knock it out of the park (or is it pitch?) with a great duet together, especially considering this end of a relationship tale. #vinyl #80s #soul https://youtube.com/watch?v=PgOsbDGs0ss&feature=share

The #SongOfTheWeek is ubiquitous, appearing in ads, overplayed to hell on radio. And yet I love it. Katrina and the Waves’ “Walking on Sunshine” wasn’t a true one hit wonder (they released two fine albums before re-recording a number of those songs for their 3rd album). It does shine over their other stuff, Which is fine as this song is so amazing, so joyous, so catchy, it destroys a lot of #80s #pop songs. It never ceases to not cause me to sing to it. #vinyl
