I remember the early days of home computers, and like everybody, I had a Soundblaster (or compatible) soundcard in mine, and I was looking for one of those #Soundblaster midi cable adapter so I could hook up my keyboard. So I went to #GuitarCenter and ask one of the salespersons if they had one. And he smugly tells me they don't carry them because "they're for toys."

I just said, "Ok, thanks." But I was thinking, "Go f*** yourself. Who the f*** are you? You work at Guitar Center!"

TIL: There were only two Through-The-Hole ICs on the #Soundblaster AWE32, one of which is apparently a 256kb DRAM next to the EMU800. It was manufactured just some 5 kilometers from here, at ›Zentrum Mikroelektronik Dresden‹, a company that could be called as spun off of the remnants of the GDR microelectronics industry. I am checking out #FreeDOS 1.3 tonight. Installed the floppy disk version to my PCem virtual 80486 system. #SimCity 2000 works fine, Mouse works, #Soundblaster 16 support works, #SVGA works. So far, so good.

Trying to learn whether the new #Creative #Soundblaster X5 USB headphone amp is a "class-compliant" USB device (so it'd work with #Linux)

Unfortunately there's no way to be understood by the support. Like eg. #Beelink they seem to reject the request as soon as it has the word Linux in it. 😖

Creative offers two software packages for this thing. No explanation as to what the difference is. They seem like they do a lot of the same things. #SoundBlaster

Also augenscheinlich kann man mit einem simplen CTIA-Adapter von 4 polig auf 2x 3,5mm Buchse und einem AUX-Kabel seine Creative Roar/Roar Pro/iRoar als Master für ein Stereo-System nutzen. Ich betreibe es mit einer Roar 2 als rechten Kanal und es klingt super für so ein kleines System.
Creative verkaufte da mal ein extra Kabel für, aber das ist nicht mehr erhältlich 🤷

Sound Blaster cards aren't relevant any longer but they were once a big deal in bringing high quality audio to PCs. I certainly went through a lot of them.

Found out today that Sim Wong Hoo, founder of Creative Labs passed away last week. I know he wasn't a household name but what computer geek in the 90s didn't have a nerdgasm when they installed their first Sound Blaster? I remember going from the crappy on board sound to that in an Intel 486 and ... exquisite. #tech #soundblaster

I didn't know his name, but I remember wanting, and eventually buying, a Sound Blaster card - back in the days when motherboards didn't all have sound capability built-in.
