The people eavesdropping on the ocean.
On 8 June, scientists all around the world took part in a global study of aquatic sound for World Oceans Passive Acoustic Monitoring Day. Researchers compared audio from over 250 sites, creating a snapshot of the global ocean soundscape at one moment in time.

"...Butler, along with Catriona Morrison and an international team of researchers, devised a study that took annual bird count numbers, generated by citizen scientists through the North American Breeding Bird Survey and the Pan European Common Bird Monitoring Scheme ... to reconstruct soundscapes from over 200,000 sites from the late 1990s and again about twenty years later.

Bernie Krause: The sound ecologist capturing a disappearing world: ‘70% of habitats I recorded are gone’
"His personal library of more than 5,000 hours of recordings holds snapshots of a rapidly deteriorating world....
Where in the 1960s, 10 hours in the field were enough to produce one hour of usable material, the time it takes today is now closer to 1,000 hours"

Knepp is a pioneering rewilding project in West Sussex.
In Feb 2022, a pair of beavers were introduced to a small brook that runs south-north through the estate....
How will this changing landscape affect the local fauna? Can we hear these changes?

New radio service broadcasts 'sounds of nature' at Knepp Estate near Horsham
"We’ve lost the wall of sound they used to generate as well as the more subtle register of insects and small mammal activity – the full orchestral ensemble of our natural world. So, we’re thrilled that Wilding Radio will be helping to connect wider audiences with the abundant birdsong and the sounds of aquatic life emanating from Knepp.”
