Higher noise sensitivity + inadequate acoustic environments + lack of understanding = negative impact in the short and long term

Next steps for Carmen Rosas-Pérez:

• survey for noise-sensitive people: surveylab.com/pageTag/SurveyCa (please participate!)
• listening experiment (online – no link – and in Edinburgh)

Music, silence, natural environment – all positive influences on health and wellbeing

‘The way I experience music that I like is through my whole body, is through my skin, like waves of music. That’s really, really special and I’d hate to lose that’

Schools in particular can be sensory hell

Things that help: quiet/outdoor spaces, *being believed*

We need agency over our environment – building design seldom takes us into account

(That last post was straight from a slide btw)

High sound sensitivity affects every aspect of life

• Sensitivity is variable
• High perceptual capacity and engagement with the surrounding environment
• Diagnosis has increased their knowledge and confidence

‘I just thought I heard everything the same as everybody else, and that they were better at kind of processing it than I was in some ways’

Many probably know this but I just heard there are some quiet hair dryers on the market now. Could be useful for households where there is somebody with e.g. people with , , etc.

@actuallyautistic As 4th of July approaches, my dread and anxiety increases...

I hated fourth of July parades because of the association of sirens and fireworks.

I always have to hold my ears when I hear emergency sirens.

Fireworks continue to startle me and hurt my ears.

Anyone else experience this problem?

I used my ear plugs in a small tavern tonight where there was music and karaoke and a lot of people talking. It’s like a whole new way to exist out in public. 😭 I can not believe I went 50 yrs not fully understanding how much this affected me! I would of normally just sat there bugging and feeling anxious. Someone mentioned they didn’t like hearing their voice and chewing food but I find it incredibly soothing and like I’m in my own sound bubble. Life changing. 😮

"The estimated prevalence of people for whom symptoms of misophonia cause a significant burden in their life in the UK was estimated to be 18%."

From: Misophonia in the UK: Prevalence and norms from the S-Five in a UK representative sample

---

That's a pretty big percentage of the population.

What noise-reducing or noise-filtering earbuds are best for ? I'm looking for something to use in a noisy office environment. (I still need to be able to hear, so not noise-cancelling earbuds/headphones.)

Just bought some of those Calmer ear plug things that are supposed to “reduce stressful sounds” and help focus on important ones. Not quite sure what to expect but if they do what I’m hoping maybe I’ll be able to hold a conversation in a crowded place without having every other noise at the same volume? Dunno, hope so! Anyone else use them or similar?
