High altitude ice formations in the dryest places in the world, the Atacama Desert, Chile. The average rainfall here is only 15mm per year. Penitentes ice formations occur only in cold dry climates, where the ice converts directly into gas without going through the liquid stage.

The Maras Salt Ponds date back to pre-Inca times. Located in the Sacred Valley, near Cusco, Peru. There are over 5,000 salt ponds in the area, which are still mined by locals.
