"Caution Otters Crossing." The South Ford Causeway linking South Uist to Benbecula in the Western Isles. The 800m causeway was opened in 1982, replacing an 82 span single-lane concrete bridge built in 1942. More pics and info: https://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/benbecula/benbecula/index.html

He's talking lots about his childhood & how his father's family were forced off #SouthUist in the #HighlandClearances so sheep could be grazed on the island. Many of the islanders were forced into boats bound for Canada, with barely the clothes on their backs. Many died from famine. My grandfather's family took their little boat & went to live on Eriskay, the tiny island deemed too stony for sheep. They lived from fishing & growing potatoes on seaweed they hauled up from the shore. My grandfather drowned aged 36, leaving a wife and 5 kids. My dad was the eldest at 7 yrs old & he saw his father's body being carried up the shore. His mum remarried, then died in childbirth. By 14, dad had gone to sea, having lied about his age to get work on cargo ships.
In talking about all this, there's no ounce of self-pity.
Me & dad haven't always got on but I feel so much tenderness for that small boy.

The fascinating harbour and ferry port of Lochboisdale or Loch Baghasdail on South Uist in the Western Isles. Just entered "The Heb" adventure race for a weekend of: exploring the #outerhebrides (specifically, #northuist #benbecula and #southuist), good company, and exhaustion. 200km of varying terrain over two days. It's next September if that sounds like something you might enjoy.

I'm camping close by and left my cosy tent in the driving rain just to walk to Cladh Hallan.
I know the photo isn't much to look at and I'm wondering why they don't make more of the place. But the circles show the site of three roundhouses where the only prehistoric mummies in Britain have been found.
(Of course, now that I'm posting this the sun's come out - for the first time today.)
