#OnThisDay, 30 Aug 1918, Socialist Revolutionary Fanya Kaplan attempts to kill Lenin after he dissolves the Russian Constituent Assembly. She's executed four days later.

Her action was a contributory factor in Lenin triggering the Bolshevik Red Terror, in which perhaps 100,000 people were killed.

It's common to find apologists for #Stalin citing Douglas Tottle's 1987 work "Fraud, Famine and Fascism: The #Ukrainian Genocide Myth from Hitler to Harvard". This is a disgusting work that berated eyewitnesses as “Ukrainian Nationalists” / Fascists.

It also played deliberate sleight of hand to imply Mykhailo Hrushevsky blamed the famine on dought.

Grover Furr has made extensive use of Valentin Astrov’s (Валентин Астров) 1937 “confessions” regularly claiming that he had “explicitly refused” to “retract” his testimony in the 1980s and 1990s. However, Astrov told #Soviet rehabilitation officials that his testimony was “fictitious and dictated by #NKVD officers”. Is Grover Furr correct?

Just learned that a wonderful young historian of modern Russia/Soviet Union, Dr. Philippa Hetherington, passed away yesterday after a long battle w/ cancer. She was on the faculty at UCL and the author of many works on law & society in Russia. She was finishing her book 'Circulating Subjects: The Traffic of Women and the Russian Construction of International Crime."
