Today in Labor History January 12, 1964: Rebels in Zanzibar began a revolt known as the Zanzibar Revolution. The poorly armed revolutionaries initially had no guns and fought with spears, knives, machetes and tire irons. They quickly overwhelmed the poorly trained police and obtained their guns. They eventually overthrew of the Sultan of Zanzibar and his mainly Arab government and proclaimed a socialist republic. East Germany, the Soviet Union and the People's Republic of China all established friendly relations with the new government.

I keep thinking about this article (👆 above). About #German memory of the #Holocaust. Everybody assumes Germany to be a "good example" of remembering, of "never again", of actually changing. But (as the article describes) there's a whole bunch of aspects to this memory that make it a complicated, messy story. Let me try to list some:

1) More memories of #Nazi atrocities were planted in "bad Germany" (DDR), as bad guys N2 (the #Soviets) tried to stress how horrid bad guys N1 (the Nazis) were...

On this date in #1939, the #ussr was expelled from the #leagueofnations due to its invasion of #Finland on 30 November of that year. Although the war did not go well for the #soviets at first, they ultimately prevailed in securing their territorial demands. The more things change… #history #europe #worldwar2
