@Thoreau @amstanley genuine question for any or planetary mechanical people out there - is a beanstalk from the moon theoretically possible, or does the fact that it is tidally locked mean that there is no such thing as a seleno-synchronous orbit which would be problematic? What if it stuck straight out from the middle of the far side with centrifugal force providing tension? (Of course, this would play havoc with the current real world intent to put large radio telescopes on the far side where we are shielded from the electromagnetic noise from Earth, but then if we become capable of beanstalks, that may be less of a problem.)

Publication details for my paper in Acta Astronautica are now available : Pages 518-528, Volume 220, September 2023, see sciencedirect.com/science/arti

Very briefly I show that...

1) to maximize payload to GEO a climber should have some form of continuous power supply : solar power is less efficient.

2) climbers should also be of modular design to enable multiple smaller launches per day, being combined to larger assemblies only to enable launch of heavier indivisible payloads.

If you're at in Baku on October 3rd : be at Technical Session D4.3 at 3pm (led by International Space Elevator Consortium) to hear Part 2 of my work, looking at climber requirements for the onward journey from GEO to Apex and beyond ... they are very different !

The paper I presented at IAC2022 in Paris last year has been revised, peer reviewed and accepted for publication.
My main conclusion is to challenge the paradigm of a single daily solar-powered climber departure each day, multiple smaller continuous-power climbers would carry more daily payload for the same tether loading.
