Thale cress (Arabidopsis thaliana) plants growing on the International Space Station for the Plant Habitat-03 experiment, which assesses whether epigenetic adaptations in one generation of plants grown in space can transfer to the next generation.

The plants are growing inside the Advanced Plant Habitat.

I'm trying something new.

I record bonus episodes of Gardeners of the Galaxy for the people who are kind enough to support me via Patreon.

For the latest bonus episode, I have released a teaser version for everyone.

And the full version is also available via my Ko-Fi shop.

In 2013, NASA astronaut Mike Hopkins did a little bit of DIY space gardening on the International Space Station.

He sprouted sunflower and pumpkin seeds in Ziplock bags and modified tubes.

Mike tweeted a handful of images of his gardening efforts, and I've collected them in a blog post (removing as much of the Twitter taint as possible 😂 ).

Which astronauts have been the keenest space gardeners?

On my list I have:

🌱Scott Kelly, dubbed the "On Orbit Gardener" for rescuing the space zinnias.

🌱Mike Foale, referred to as "Farmer Foale" for continuing his plant experiments on Mir after the Progress collision.

🌱Don Pettit, who grew the famous "Space Zucchini" (and also sprouted seeds in his underpants...)

Who else?

In 2018, the German Space Agency launched a satellite equipped with two greenhouses designed to grow tiny tomatoes at gravity levels equivalent to those found on the Moon and Mars. But it was more than just an experiment to grow plants in space. In the latest Gardeners of the Galaxy podcast, I explore Eu:CROPIS, a project to develop a biological life-support system... for tomatoes.
