Thank you @atomicpoet
for news of #SpaceHost and indirectly thereby to https://writefreely.org/ Lovely sites. I presume @spacehost will be hosting WriteFreely. I shall inquire.
Here comes #SpaceHost...
Centralising the #fediverse yay! 🤦♂️
Took longer than I expected. Many will still not get it, but many do. Unfortunately even those who get it will be tempted because that's how this works.
#fedi is the lifeboat, #p2p is the shore
Until we have tech that is easier to do independently than through a service, VCs will bait and switch, time and again.

Hahaha! Yes, I love all the extra toys Firefish had to offer, including the reactions! It is a super piece of software! However, it felt a bit unstable for prime time just yet, at least to me.
I am on the wait list for #SpaceHost , so if they hit me up with an available Firefish slot .... I'll likely hop back over.
As a friend recently stated, "I change instances more often than you change socks." 😉😂😂😂
Okayit is officially #firefish is offline snd #Firefish and #Spacehost were my beggest mistkes ever. Good night, I am leaving for a while because my day and experience have been ruined.
After switching and using it for a day. My number 1 lacking feature of #Firefish is actual speef and respond time. The second is app support.
FireFish is slow. It was so slow that I thought that it was my own fault, connection, and error. To the point that I am benchmarking it now vs. other instances for 100 logins, 100 posts, and 100 favorites and logging the response time.
The other thing is just the loading of the state. I saw a post a saw earlier, liking it again and getting an API error that I already liked it, but it is not showing. The front-end doesn't load states of liking and reactions. One of its core advertised features.
The only thing properly working is the formating and #Markdown. That is it, if you get something posted without a timeout warning getting thrown.
I'll post the graphs of the benchmarks and code once done. I actually want to do it for all Firefish and #Spacehost clients now.
#firefish #markdown #spacehost
#SpaceHost now has its own official presence on the Fediverse.

@rainlights @pseudonym Same. I have two Mastodon accounts (this one and a French one) on small instances, so I wanted my Calckey/Firefish account on the flagship, but now I'm thinking about moving to a smaller instance too.
(actually, I may just try to create an individual instance just for me with #SpaceHost when it's available for everyone)
@atomicpoet Chris, I've been thinking more and more about running my individual instance (possibly FireFish). You said that it should be possible with #SpaceHost soon. What I'm unsure about is the technical skills required.
I have run several Wordpress sites over the years so that I can do, but as soon as coding is involved, I'm lost (and the hosting side of Wordpress I can only manage thanks to CPanel but I need my host's help from time to time if something too weird happens).
@cendawanita @marianisoehartono I understand @atomicpoet is working on creating #SpaceHost, which _should_ make it easier for folks to create their own calckey instances. I’d wait for that to go live.
Assuming we find server space, installing Calckey seems “easy” enough; at least the instructions make sense to me. It’s the admin-ing (making sure the server isn’t overloaded; installing the right patches in time etc) which could a bigger time sink. That’s before we get to mod duties.
Before even Meta gets to it, a major money-making opportunity is a way to manage customer service profiles on the Fediverse.
#SpaceHost is sort of working on this.
Rather than companies creating a mastodon.social account, they get their own domain name, and spin up employee profiles on their company domain.
People can ask questions, etc.
There seems to be a CORS issue at https://spacehost.one , it prevents submitting the early access form.
Ah… the allure of self-hosting my own Fedi instance…. The pull grows stronger… Anyone have a hot tip on a non-techy (also cheap) way to do this? I’m on the waitlist for #SpaceHost, now… not sure what it is, other than that @atomicpoet is involved.
#SelfHosting
The urge to host my own instance gets stronger as I scroll through these old toots on my home timeline.
Is there already an ETA on #SpaceHost? I just need to compare a few sites since I know shit installing and running Mastodon. If it's as easy as WordPress then I could do it, but I skimmed through Mastodon's installation notes and it's not like WP's.
Ok, back to scrolling up.
@rabbinathan
There's actually automated hosting services coming online for exactly that kinda use case, if you can't find someone you trust to do it. @atomicpoet and others are working on #Spacehost for the purpose, or if you trust cloudflare to not f it up, there's Wildebeest.
Looks like @atomicpoet will be supporting Lemmy with #Spacehost ?
Based on this post:
@seanb @kainoa @atomicpoet The name change also helps avoid a potential legal fight online, as there is already a company using the #Calckey name on the App Store (it's a calculator app that does not boast great ratings).
Changing it is a good thing! Once #Spacehost launches & a decent iPhone / iPad app arrives, I plan to launch a solo instance based upon the platform formally known as Calckey.
I still plan on using #Misskey, #Mastodon, #Pixelfed & #Writefreely. 😀
#calckey #spacehost #misskey #Mastodon #pixelfed #WriteFreely
For shits and giggles, I entertained the idea of, after replacing the defective RAM, using my now-redundant DS 218+ #Synology as a #Mastodon instance.
After reviewing the 27(!)-step process that ends with “I can consult if you run into issues”, I’m fairly certain that’s beyond my ken.
Hurry up with #SpaceHost, please!
#synology #Mastodon #spacehost
What type of hosting? i am actually in need of a new hosting platform.
@atomicpoet This is a great structure/breakdown/history of things. I'm still reading through the thread, but I'd say you're right on target. Now I have to check out #Spacehost and your other projects - looks quite impressive.
