Just finished this book (first in a series) and enjoyed it very much.

The central premise involves the threat of moon-sized crystalline intelligences destroying inhabited planets via gravity-sculpting. And the efforts of intelligent species to stop this process.

The main plot though centers on a salvage ship and ragtag crew who repeatedly get drawn into incidents surrounding this.

Because she believes entirely in her mission. She believes she's protecting the world from a violent threat, that that protection requires sacrifice and vigilance. It's not even a hard call, for her.

For no particularly good reason a post by @ GeneticJen gave me a few ideas for a "Space Opera Roguelike". Spaceships, planetoids, and colonies have random baddies who sometimes own the ship, sometimes just occupy it. Take over the bridge and you can fly the spaceship and dock with other ships and colonies. There are shops / mining / friendlies / 4-winged pets just like normal. No guns/lasers because we're mostly on spaceships, durr; so it's daggers and plastic dart guns.

I read that lengths in the industry are minimum 50K words, and the sweet spot is 70K to 100K.

I'm so relieved! I thought it was 120K! My book will probably arrive at 70K, maybe a little less. A short novel, not another unsellable novella.
