A space-based project has successfully transmitted power to Earth for the first time. The project, led by Lockheed Martin’s Skunk Works, uses a solar array in orbit to beam microwaves to a receiver on the ground. The power could be used for remote areas, disaster relief, or even military operations.

I recall a discussion of this idea on the sci.space Usenet channel in the late 1980s. The general design does not seem to have changed much since then. Computers are more powerful, antennas may be more efficient/precise etc...

I suppose we can assume that a power density of 500 W/m^2 on the ground (50% of sunlight at noon) would be bad enough to make it a weapon. Right? >>
