But in fact Randall Munroe _himself_ wrote elsewhere that this isn't really true. As Larry Niven put it in _The Integral Trees_: up takes you back, back takes you down, down takes you forward, and forward takes you up.

(précis: The rocket would probably have been fine had the launchpad not sent huge chunks everywhere, because they decided to do the launchpad differently.)
I'm sure that others did likewise. And some of us do know that lots of rockets blew up in the 1960s and that rockets are in fact renowned for blowing up. (-:

It's an interesting point to consider: Does any thesaurus list "disassemble" as a synonym for "explode"?
For fun, I just checked a 1962 Roget's that I have. It doesn't. But it does suggest "disintegrate", "fracture", "rupture", "bust", "fragment", "comminute", and "triturate".
