I've often contemplated why I find westerns so intriguing and enjoyable in spite of their problematic nature. I think one reason being they have a very clear structure and formula and many of my favorite westerns (written and filmed) take those conventions and toy with them or even turn them on their head. In this way they comment on history, story, perception, and morality while walking the fine line of being accessible to the masses.
