The Librarian brought me one of OGS’s rare books today to take a look at. It’s “An illustrated and descriptive art collection of America's new possessions; beautiful color photos, every picture from actually taken on the spot” from 1901. Full of colorized images from the Spanish-American War in the Philippines like this one showing an Army block house on the outskirts of Manilla.

Learned last night that my great grandfather Hans B Christensen's brother Christen served in the NY Infantry in the Spanish American War! Just sent off for his service records

Christen was born in Denmark in 1878, immigrated in 1891, served in 1898-1899, died in Brooklyn in 1947.

Today in Labor History February 15, 1898: The battleship USS Maine explode in Havana harbor, Cuba. 274 crew members died. Some US Navy officers believed that the explosion was caused by a fire in the coal bunker, not by a Spanish mine. However, spurred on by propaganda in the Yellow Press, the U.S. used the incident to justify declaring war on Spain. 385 U.S. soldiers and nearly 800 Spanish soldiers died in the Spanish-American war. And the U.S. gained Cuba, Puerto Rico, Guam and the Philippines as de facto colonies from Spain. The war also precipitated U.S. involvement in the Philippine Revolution and the Philippine-American War. Up to 6,000 Americans and 12,000-20,000 Filipinos died in that war. However, as many as 1 million Filipino civilians died from famine and disease during the genocidal U.S. occupation.

On this day! Remember the Maine! Button from my grandmother that was meant to commemorate the sinking of the USS Maine on 15 Feb 1898 in Havana. The sinking was caused by a fire next to their munitions storage, but due to claims of a Spanish mine precipitating the explosion - it started the Spanish-American War.

The USS Olympia was the flagship of the US East Asia Squadron from 1895-1899 & while on station its baseball team played teams from other ships both American & foreign. In the 2 years before George Dewey took command of the squadron the team lost only 2 games. With the the games stopped. @usnavy

In early January, 1898, after taking command of the USS Olympia at Nagasaki Japan, Commodore George Dewey wrote to his son "Affairs are very unsettled in the Far East and I expect my term of service out here will be very interesting."
