Today in dodgy #SpatialHumanities #WebArchiving bodges, I'd like to introduce the 'tile suck'.
So if you use most conventional automated archiving tools on a website with a leaflet map on it (in this example a #Curatescape Mapbox map for the @PortsPastPres website), you may notice that they only ever capture the map tiles visible on the screen.
Not good enough, I say! So my strategy is this:
1) Get the biggest screen you can find. Biiiiiiig. (zooming out on the browser doesn't seem to quite work)
2) Open up the map with the tileset that you want to hoover up into your WARC record (probably in Chrome because that's what Archiveweb.page works on). Set your Leaflet or whatever map viewer to full screen. Start your crawl.
3) Zoom around at each level of zoom for areas of zoom and focus on your map. I'm using a point cluster map so I focus on the areas where my points are. The big screen means that whenever you hit an undownloaded tile, it'll pull it in.

My Inaugural Lecture (also marking the end of my time as Head of Department of @kingsdh) "The Spatial Humanities: A Challenge to the All-Knowing Map" will be held at King's on 20th June. Drinks afterwards. It will also be livestreamed (not the drinks alas).

How will this help #SpatialHumanities and #DigitalHumanities research? High-quality, georeferenced historical maps can be used with #ComputerVision, like our work analysing railway infrastructure: https://dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/3557919.3565812 & https://academic.oup.com/jvc/article/26/2/284/6232245

What’s your favorite urban scam? I fell for the poo on the shoe one in #Delhi (at almost the exact spot mentioned in this article: https://so.city/delhi/article/the-poo-on-the-shoe-scam-in-delhi). It makes me think a scam map would be a good #spatialhumanities project

Modern China Geospatial Database Interface
What? The interface helps users to consult/retrieve information about Chinese locations that has been collected so far by the enp-China team (mostly for the Qing and Republican perios), either via the search bar or by uploading a cvs file of Chinese place (and province) names.

Pushing this here: "Gliding in the Churchway paths: Corpse Roads and the Origins of the Right to Roam". A look at so-called corpse paths (my rather niche hobby) and access to the countryside. Folklore Society online talk, 10th January next year.

I'm re-posting my #introduction, adding a few hashtags and links. I work at @kingsdh, where I am Professor of #SpatialHumanities and Head of Department. I'll also take the opportunity to correct the typo in my last, my institution is of course King's College London. Find me at #digitalhumanities, #literarygeography, #folklore, and probably more that will occur to me.
