Spay/neuter surgeries casn help, but large-scle sterilization of often feral animals is infeasible. 'David Pépin, a reproductive biologist at Massachusetts General Hospital, spent his early career researching antimüllerian hormone (AMH), which is produced by follicles in the ovary that give rise to eggs.' Pépin + colleagues inserted the AMH gene with a harmless virus often used to ferry replacement genes into cells with an injection into thigh muscles. The treated cats failed to ovulate, while the sham-injected controls remained fertile. One cat followed over 5 yrs continued to exhibit elevated AMH. A meeting is planned next month with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to map out larger safety + efficacy studies, but a commercial product will probably not be available for 5 yrs. My last fosters went to their home Thursday and I have major empty nest syndrome.

The fact that the foster room is empty speaks to the volumes of work that I did; speutering, socializing, and adopting scores of cats and kittens from this 'hood, but going into that room cold and empty after 18 months of fuzzy inhabitants was super creepy. It felt cold and dead, in contrast to the warmth and life it held 36 hours prior.

The twin boys got neutered yesterday. Another cat was spayed yesterday who just had her fifth litter, with 7 kittens. Her last litter had 6. That was 13 babies who needed a home. It's so so so important to #spayandneuter your pets or catch, sterilize, and release ferals.

I feed & water 4 feral cats in my community. There are probably more, but these are the ones I see regularly. My next-door neighbor also puts food out. I don't have much money & can't afford a prefab shelter, like a small dog house. For about $2 I bought a moving box. After closing the box on 3 sides, I put old clothing & a cheap pet bed inside the box & it's on my covered patio. It makes a decent shelter for cold nights. If it gets wet, it's easy to replace.
