I'm giving an talk today at The Morton Arboretum (my home institution). It's about the importance of and , and a vision possible next directions.

Including a link here in case you are interested and to hear your thoughts. Some of these are institution-specific, but the questions we're addressing in the world and the worlds of and intersect. I'd love to hear how this overlaps with your ideas.

The new Morton Arboretum herbarium digitization room is up and running! Here with Charlene Kueterman, herbarium intern, digitizing specimens. The room looks spare now, but we have another digitization station coming later this year.

For I wanted to give you some of the largest larvae known to Flies.

Pantophthalmus vittatus (Pantophthalmidae) - the larvae are wood feeders, feeding in the excavated tunnels of dead & living trees , on organic matter &/or its fermentation

The adults - although looking like horseflies - dont feed at all!

Years ago I wrote a paper that’s turned out to be used 2-3 orders of magnitude more often than it’s been cited. And that’s perfect. The most important long-term contributions we can make to science could well be the specimens we deposit into research collections. Keep up the great work, everyone.

Excited to share recently accepted review by Rauri Bowie and I in J. Heredity. We discuss how the DNA from millions of in can illuminate past population responses to anthropogenic change and uniquely inform a host of questions.

For advance access article. doi.org/10.1093/jhered/esac066

Look for this review along with many other exciting papers in a special issue edited by @KZ_UTAustin appearing in J. Heredity next year.

My day job mostly revolves around managing the UChicago PaleoCT Lab. This scanner can achieve resolutions of up to 1 micron and can scan through dense (though dense fossil at 1 micron would be tricky). I’ve scanned all sorts of things: (even parts of Sue the t-rex!), bones, alcohol preserved , meteorites and more!

Located at the entrance of the Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum, Singapore, is the skeleton of this Indo-Pacific Humpbacked dolphin, found on the shore in 2014.

You might think marine mammals would avoid the busy shipping waters around Singapore, but no, they don't.
