#Freshwater #mussels, many of which are of #conservation #concern, are a great target for #environmental #DNA (#eDNA) detection to guide #management #tactics and #strategies.
But as the authors of this new paper point out: "Confidence in our ability to identify eDNA #metabarcoding reads relies on a #curated, #accurate #database."
Use of eDNA methods various purposes is going to mean a lot of work with #specimens and databases in coming years.

#Namibia 🇳🇦 has yielded many #fossils of #Ediacarans, ~600 million year old #organisms that shed light on the early #evolution of #animals. One iconic #Ediacaran, #Rangea, was first described from Namibia, where a few #specimens are preserved in #3D, giving an idea of what this #ancient #enigma might have looked like when alive.

I'm giving an #herbarium talk today at The Morton Arboretum (my home institution). It's about the importance of #herbaria and #specimens, and a vision possible next directions.
Including a link here in case you are interested and to hear your thoughts. Some of these are institution-specific, but the questions we're addressing in the #museum world and the worlds of #informalScienceEducation and #scicomm intersect. I'd love to hear how this overlaps with your ideas.

Hi #biodiversity community:
Im thrilled to officially announce RANGES, an @NSF@twitter.com-funded effort to digitize #traits from #mammal #specimens from across western North America.
RANGES will open millions of phenotypic, reproductive, and ecological data for research and training.

The new Morton Arboretum herbarium digitization room is up and running! Here with Charlene Kueterman, herbarium intern, digitizing specimens. The room looks spare now, but we have another digitization station coming later this year.

For #MaggotMonday I wanted to give you some of the largest larvae known to Flies.
Pantophthalmus vittatus (Pantophthalmidae) - the larvae are wood feeders, feeding in the excavated tunnels of dead & living trees , on organic matter &/or its fermentation
The adults - although looking like horseflies - dont feed at all! #collections #specimens #flies #nature #diptera

Years ago I wrote a paper that’s turned out to be used 2-3 orders of magnitude more often than it’s been cited. And that’s perfect. The most important long-term contributions we can make to science could well be the specimens we deposit into research collections. Keep up the great work, everyone. #Specimens #Museums
Excited to share recently accepted review by Rauri Bowie and I in J. Heredity. We discuss how the DNA from millions of #specimens in #MuseumCollections can illuminate past population responses to anthropogenic change and uniquely inform a host of #conservation #genomics questions.
For advance access article. https://doi.org/10.1093/jhered/esac066
Look for this review along with many other exciting #ConservationGenomics papers in a special issue edited by @KZ_UTAustin appearing in J. Heredity next year.

#OTD Jacob #Schneck, Indiana #Physician, #Naturalist, & #Botanist, is born.
Jacob's passion was #Plants & he spent his #SpareTime #Botanizing. He labeled all his #Specimens with his #Impeccable #Handwriting.
He #Spied a unique #Species of #RedOak & told the Botanist Nathaniel Lord #Britton. Britton named the oak in Jacob's honor - Quercus Schneckii, also known as the Schneck #Oak.
Jacob died at 63, tending his patients to the end - despite his own #Pneumonia.

#OTD Howard Scott Gentry, American #Botanist, is born.
The world's leading authority on #Agaves, Howard went to #Mexico every year to collect #specimens & traveled via #Mule.
The #USDA pursued #Agave & #Wild #Yam #Family to make #Arthritis #Medicine.
Howard once said:
I refused several times to become a desk man for USDA. It was a chance to cut out all the #Travel, but I told them,
"No, not me. I want to work with #Plants, not people. People are problems."

In our research group we primarily use a specimen-based approach. It’s an exciting time to be a biologist. Glad to see so many interesting colleagues and discussions on this site.

@vagina_museum I bet if you call over to the #Natural #History #Museum #London you may get a lead on whether one exists. Occasionally they unearth well preserved #specimens.

My day job mostly revolves around managing the UChicago PaleoCT Lab. This #microCT scanner can achieve resolutions of up to 1 micron and can scan through dense #fossil (though dense fossil at 1 micron would be tricky). I’ve scanned all sorts of things: #fossils (even parts of Sue the t-rex!), bones, alcohol preserved #specimens, meteorites and more!

Other fascinating marine specimens from the past, now lost, from the "200: a natural history" exhibition at the Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum, Singapore. A whale shark and an ocean sunfish.

Located at the entrance of the Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum, Singapore, is the skeleton of this Indo-Pacific Humpbacked dolphin, found on the shore in 2014.
You might think marine mammals would avoid the busy shipping waters around Singapore, but no, they don't.
