If there's been one lesson from my poking about with NextBASIC on the #SpectrumNext over the last few weeks, it's a reminder than line numbers for programming were best left in the 20th Century.

(I hope that's not a hot take, but I certainly haven't missed them across the more modern code I've written for web/mobile/Unity/et al this century!)

ZX #SpectrumNext alert: Next-compatible #TBBlue computers are available, based on the #NGO board by #Manuferhi of Spain.

This is a Portuguese shop that assembles the N-GO boards with #Speccy 48k cases and traditional rubber keyboards.

It also doesn't hurt that it costs about half as much as the #ZXSpectrum Next.

I also took the liberty of replacing/updating the CP 437 glyphs for the currencies no longer in use (Spanish Peseta, and Dutch Guilder) with the more useful Euro sign. The Euro sign € only became part of modern standards much later in 1998 (Unicode 2.1), and in 1999 (ISO 8859-15).

I also did some work to display 86 columns on the ZX Spectrum Next and text is readable, but it's too funky, most people would probably hate it.

I think the #SpectrumNext display can only be interpreted in 3 different ways:

1 - Retro games display <- The one originally intended purpose.

2 - 80x25 text mode <- For terminal display, it doesn't come with the system, must be built. #WIP

3 - 320x256 mobile <- Mobile user interfaces of early smartphones can be implemented.

Painstakingly attempting to "port" the IBM CP 437 character set to the ZX Spectrum Next, and hopefully be able to produce a 80x25 text mode. For terminal purposes!

After years I think I've figured out how to display 80 columns of monospaced text on the #SpectrumNext in L2 256 colour mode. You may not like the aesthetics, but the text is readable. Still wildly experimental for a #Speccy but it felt like a mini-nano-eureka moment last night.

Even against a densely textured background, the quick reference design of Timex/Sam spaceship that I made in a few minutes could still look relatively decent. And it would look better on a ZX Spectrum Next.

Fantastic platform action for the ZX Spectrum and Spectrum Next.

I backed #spectrumnext 2 & all things being right in the universe it should arrive later in 2023. Till now I've had the idea to avoid playing with the next related stuff until I have the actual hardware. but I've decided meh blow that I wanna play with it now, so I've downloaded cspec emulator by the very talented @mdf200 and will be poking at the next couple of days. then I'm gonna have another run at #zxspectrum programming. Yep, for me #spectrumnext is mostly about a nicely packaged FPGA platform. The #bbcmicro core for it is excellent, and includes a second processor.

(I'd hoped the compatible edge connector meant full 5V interoperability, but I'm not 100% on that any more. And the keyboard is quirky, but very speccy.)

There's an Amstrad core too, and you can certainly run CP/M on it.
