FORESIGHT. The main appeal of #midjourney is its ability to create diegetic props: objects of the future. If speculating far into the future, these things should have a ring of familiarity but be otherwise alien. Would someone from from ancient Greece make sense of an espresso machine? Or a mid-20th Century telephone? In that spirit, what is this, from 3023? What does it do? What does the apparent materiality suggest? Indeed, what is that materiality?

DESIGN FICTION. A new kickstarter book just landed in my mailbox from the Near Future Laboratory. It's about foresight and design, specifically how designers can develop speculative scenarios to influence the future. There also seems to be plenty of commentary about the shortsightedness of current design practice. Looks like a good complement to Dunne & Rabe's Speculative Everything (2013).

How do mods facilitate discussion? I came up with four prompts and a little formula. Each mod has a different style, and conversations were wide-ranging, so these were just guidelines to start with:
Expand
Build
Redefine
Split or find nuance between

Formula: engage with the author of one word; bring it to the group for discussion through above framings. See what happens.

Playing the game:
Each individual goes to a breakout room where three rounds of play are completed on simple game boards.

Each round has 1 minute of silent brainstorming on an i social fig jam game board followed by 15-20 minutes of discussion.

Now, the rules of the game:
1. Symposium means discussion. The purpose of gathering is to exchange ideas, not listen to lectures.
2. Chatham House rules.
3. Respectful interlocution only.
4. Equity-driven conversation: if you talk a lot, make space for others; if you tend to keep quiet, take opportunities to speak.
5. Ideation: build intentionally on ideas as they come up in discussion

First, the prompt: What would the world look like if our org named our domains (~170) based on customer action instead of anything else?

Only concrete nouns and vivid verbs allowed! No acronyms, brand names, or office names.
