I did a pro bono consulting and am left with a bit of a dilemma, so tell me , what would you do. 7yo girl attends a middle class . A 1st grade boy repeatedly enters the girl's bathroom and taunts the girl's as he looks at them under the doors. After the girl's privacy had been violated a number of times over weeks, she finally kicked the boy in the face the last time, as he was peering at her. Girl is developmentally delayed and school punished her, not 1/2

Had a shitty meeting with my child’s school director, and teacher about affirming care, and why their constant questioning during remote sessions to try to force AAC usage is BS. It did not go well. and therapists appear inextricably connected with forcing upon those of us who are and/or I am grateful to read about this organization: therapistndc.org/advocacy/disa

Important reporting on off-the-books measures that some schools take to keep kids with disabilities out of class, rather than putting in place more supports to include them.

I have a HUGE amount of as a white, cis, able bodied appearing queer womxn in a heteronormative relationship. I can only imagine how horrible Black and Brown folx with disabilities are treated in these institutionalized meetings. I was literally having a due to the stress. Just provide the DAMN services!

Buried in this article abt the 6yo boy who shot his is this telling statement about the child's "care plan". Clearly the school failed to provide if they were requiring the parents to chaperone their child throughout the day. I'm not a fan of more restrictive environments for young , but if a doesn't have the resources to ensure a safe environment for all kids under their care, then a change should have been made.

@BlackAzizAnansi I worked for an international K-12 online school that contracts with states to run charter schools. (I was over qualified for the job but hoping it might lead to something better in the co.) Had a dad call. His son suffered a TBI from football. I rearranged the kid's upcoming juniir yr schedule and gave the dad info on educational planning & issues to be in the look out for. Documented everything, including rationale. Local principal over-ruled the entire plan because 1/2

@lovelybookshelf You bring up an impt point about accurately reporting enrollment statistics: What actually constitutes ?

If a child is subject to attendance requirements - state testing (not chosen by the parent) - is eligible to receive and services - has access to sports and after-school programming BUT all their instruction happens at home through online instruction, that child is generally not considered a homeschooler.

@Leork Not defending flat-earthers, but if you're going to come after & call certain choices , then you have to look at what are teaching. Like teaching Moses as essentially a US Founding Father. Or, the countless districts that use Fountas & Pinella or Calkins instructional material that do not actually teach kids to read. If you really want to talk about abuse, we can examine the excessive use of restraint & seclusion on kids.

@lussenpop Bottom line: The rights of are often violated by schools that demand behavioral compliance. BIPs are ignored while schools don't provide an engaging environment or the supports or interventions these kids need. Then the schools play charades with mtgs and blame the kids. Most parents don't fully understand their rights under and it just becomes a vicious cycle of state sanctioned . /2

@meoutloud ... of being able to move students into different groupings based on their strengths. An 8yo doing algebra may be grouped with a majority of 13yos, but if their reading skills aren't as advanced, they'd be grouped with other 7-9yos. Same philosophy applies for kids with an . Not every kid is low-achieving across all subjects. They should absolutely have the opportunity to keep advancing in their areas of strength. /3

@meoutloud I hear your concerns about not wanting to promote -isms within education. For the better part of the last decade (pre-covid) my work focus was split between the needs of profoundly gifted kids (think kids who start college as early as 10) and kids/teens caught up in the juvenile justice system (often mis-served by public school ). I am extremely sensitive to dismantling the system as well as ensuring ALL have the opp to learn. When you think about ... /1

Every child deserves to move forward with their - especially the who have already mastered their grade-level content before the 1st day of school. has given us more reason than ever to move from age-based to ability-based pods. We can continue to use with our students while finally meeting the needs of students at the other end of the spectrum. /3
